Location:

Aljezur or Algezur is a Portuguese municipality belonging to the district of Faro, sub-region (NUT III) region (NUT II) of the Algarve, of which the town of Aljezur is the seat.

The municipality of Aljezur covers an area of 323.50 km² and has 6161 inhabitants (2021 census), subdivided into 4 freguesias. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Odemira, to the east by Monchique, to the south-east by Lagos, to the south-west by Vila do Bispo and to the west by a long coastline with the Atlantic Ocean. The Ribeira de Seixe forms the north-western boundary with the municipality of Odemira. The municipality's coastline forms part of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.

King Dinis granted a charter to Aljezur in 1280.

History:

Aljezur is a land of distant origins, whose antiquity is attested to by the many archaeological remains that have been discovered here. Its territory has been inhabited since prehistoric times.

Aljezur was founded in the 10th century by the Arabs, who stayed for five centuries until the Christian conquest, leaving behind important traces such as the castle, its cistern, the place names and numerous popular legends and stories.

In the 13th century, during the reign of Afonso III, Aljezur was finally wrested from the Moors by Paio Peres Correia. On 12 November 1280, King Dinis granted Aljezur a charter.

On 1 June 1504, D. Manuel reformed D. Dinis' charter, granting the town the title of "Noble and Honoured".

In 1755, Aljezur was devastated by an earthquake. Bishop D. Francisco Gomes do Avelar ordered the construction of the church of Nossa Senhora D'Alva on the outskirts of the village, so that the inhabitants could settle there and a new population could develop.
