Description

As the house on St Mellion Drive was being constructed, the owners watched with excitement and looked forward to being able to move in and make it into a real home. It was over 25 years ago now that they first fell in love with it, realising that they had found everything they were looking for on one generous plot in Great Denham. “It was still in the process of being built when we first saw it, but we realised it would be perfect for us,” one of them recalls. “It was one of just 30 houses on this quiet cul-de-sac, each home had a double garage and large plots and it had a south-facing garden that we knew we could landscape and make our own. It also had large bedrooms, with built-in wardrobes, which I was very keen on alongside nice features such as the central staircase and inglenook fireplace.”

SUNNY DAYS

Since moving in, the couple have gone on to enhance the detached, five-bedroom house in many ways. “We added a conservatory – this was something we knew we wanted to do as soon as we saw the house,” she remembers. “We also had 16 solar panels installed on the roof and an electric car charger fitted. Now it doesn’t cost anything to drive the car if the sun is shining!” The garden has matured into a changing picture for each season, which is a riot of colour in the spring and summer, was landscaped to create four different seating areas, lawn and gorgeous areas of mature planting. They added a fruit frame, where they went on to produce an abundance of raspberries and red and blackcurrants, and a workshop, which could make a great outside office or gym. “Over the years, we have also redecorated the whole house and replaced the kitchen,” she adds.

WINTER WARMING

Set back from the road by a generous front garden and sizeable driveway offering ample parking, the property is entered via a lobby and then a generous, central reception hall. To the left, this gives on to the cosy family room or snug, which has a bay window to the front. “This could also be a study but I like to sit in here to watch television in the evenings as it is so quiet,” she says. Opposite, is the very generous sitting room, which also features a bay window to the front of the house. With French windows on to the rear garden and a large inglenook fireplace with a living flame gas fire, this is a splendid room for entertaining and welcoming family and friends at Christmas. “This room is a real delight when the fire is on during the winter months,” the owner agrees.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

There is also access to a ground-floor cloakroom and the dining room and kitchen from the hall. The kitchen leads into a utility room, which has an external door. “The kitchen is a lovely room, with windows on two sides. It now has a very modern style, with white units and sliding drawers and appliances that we replaced,” she says. “It was very well designed for ease of use, with good food preparation space and storage.” The dining room is a formal room that is mostly used when friends and relatives visit. This has French windows on to the conservatory, which in turn opens on to the garden. “We have always spent a lot of time in the conservatory because it is nice to be able to look out over the garden,” she adds.

BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS

All five bedrooms are on the first floor of the house. The master suite is almost in a wing of its own, the current owner explains. “It is so spacious it is like a ballroom!” she suggests. “It is a lovely room, with plenty of space for a four-poster bed and a large en suite bathroom that looks out over the garden.” One of the other bedrooms also has an en suite shower room. The other bedrooms share the family bathroom. “All the bedrooms are double in size but the smallest one is currently arranged as an office,” she explains.

FAMILY LIFE

Should new owners wish to extend the house further, there is ample space around it, she observes. Subject to the relevant planning permissions it could also be possible to go up into the attic to add two more bedrooms and a bathroom. The friendly neighbourhood is an ideal place for a family, she agrees. It is tranquil and yet it offers excellent access to local amenities, as well as to Bedford, Milton Keynes and the A421 and M1. “There are also lots of nice places to go walking close by,” she adds. “This is a very green area and it is nice to think about how much a family might enjoy living here.”

SETTING THE SCENE

The grounds at the house on St Mellion Drive are very mature. To the front of the property there is an immaculate front garden with a driveway and double garage. To the rear, the generous garden encompasses different seating areas, as well as lawn and mature trees and shrubs. There is a summer house and a workshop that could have a variety of different uses.
