Fontenay-Le-Comte is truly one of the most beautiful in the Vendée, perhaps even one of the loveliest in France.  Discover the thousand years of history by walking the “mille ans d’histoire” route and enjoy the Renaissance architecture.  Then sample the excellent shops, restaurants and other leisure activities.  The town is the gateway to the Poitevin marshes, known as the Green Venice of the West.  Here you can punt along the canals and observe the unique flora and fauna.  Then for a totally different experience walk, horse ride or cycle in the Mervent forest.

A short drive takes you to La Rochelle, which is young, chic and with an active cultural scene.   It benefits from a warm gulf breeze and is a very popular destination for family holidays.  It is connected by bridge to the Ile de Re, an unspoilt island with wildlife reserves, salt marshes and oyster farms.
