The Story
Every time he steps into magnificent Lith Hall he marvels at its glorious space and loses his breath to the sheer beauty of what has been created here.
The current owner, who is an experienced and accomplished developer, bought the unique former church hall, in its incredible Victoria Park Road setting, planning to transform it into luxury apartments.
But his wife, who had a gift for creative interiors and beautiful design, convinced him it could be converted into a phenomenal family home for themselves.
Today not only is it exceptional in the amazing space it offers in its sought-after East End location but the perfection and quality of its design and finish is simply out of this world.
This is an incredible home the likes of which you rarely find in London, he said. It has its own classic elegance and is timeless. Everything about it is beautiful yet it is also a comfortable place in which to live as a family.
INCREDIBLE VISION
Originally, explained the owner, there was a church in Victoria Park, and the hall belonged to it. But, after the church was bombed during the second world war, the building was given to the Lithuanian Society as a gathering place - hence the property's current name.
My wife said she'd always thought the building would make a wonderful home - and she was right. It took a long time for the planners to agree to it becoming one large property and about three years of work went into the building.
In the end, there was no budget - everything was done to the highest quality - and when you see how incredible it is today, you can understand that it was worth the journey to realise my wife's vision - and just why there will never be another house like it, he said.
SHEER WONDER
Today, stepping into the great open expanse of the astounding entrance hall, the ornate white marble staircase, which took eight weeks to construct, makes an immediate statement.
With its intricate and beautifully finished, hand-made balustrade, it is the focal point around which the fabulous spaces of Lith Hall span out.
Everything has been carefully book-matched, explained the owner. My wife used a lot of wonderful materials, including many that were natural. She wanted to create spaces that looked wonderful but were not ostentatious.
She brought in interesting pieces that were reclaimed and used unusual touches, such as the murals, painted by an artist, who was specially flown in from Poland.
LIFE AND STYLE
The balance between exciting aesthetics and ease of living has been achieved magnificently, he stressed.
Whenever I walk into the house I feel its amazing vibe. No matter where I am - the stunning master bedroom, with its beautiful, marble en-suite bathroom, or the cinema room - there is an overwhelming 'wow factor' - yet at the same time it feels homely, he said. Every room has a bespoke finish.
He went on: There is so much to love about this house. I like standing at the windows and looking out at the green of the park opposite. I love watching the children as they enjoy all this space to play in.
AMAZING SPACE
On warm days, bi-folding doors from the kitchen can be pulled right back, allowing easy access to the garden.
During the evening, and at night, the mood changes throughout Lith Hall, as the intelligent lighting system is brought into play.
The house is wonderful with the natural light during the day - then at night it almost becomes somewhere else, he said.
I do not think I will ever find a home like this again. It is amazing.
Accommodation
GROUND FLOOR
From the gated frontage of Lith Hall, with views of Victoria Park opposite, the true size of this interesting building is not immediately apparent and it is not until you step inside that you can appreciate the full expanse of accommodation that spans opulently across four floors. Entering via the antique front double doors, the ground floor is a striking open plan space that incorporates a sitting area and kitchen with a magnificent central staircase that forms a natural divide between the two areas. The sitting room is simply beautiful, incorporating elegant décor whilst retaining a very relaxed ambience. The engineered Dutch oak flooring is a striking feature that spans across the space, contrasting with the walls and complimenting the striking granite fireplace with inset television above. The room also has a built-in Kef sound system and touch screen media/audio centre, making it ideal for movies and music. From the sitting area there are also views over the front and side of the property and Victoria Park.
The impressive central staircase leads to the various floors of the house, with the treads finished in white marble and beautifully complimented by the ornate wrought iron banisters. Opposite the staircase is a striking storage cupboard that was cleverly designed by the owner's late wife using reclaimed doors that work well with the design scheme. Beyond is the open plan kitchen and dining area which proves to be a sumptuous display of sleek cabinetry topped by granite work surfaces. In the centre of the kitchen there is a large curvaceous island with cooking station. The freestanding La Cornue stainless steel gas cooker is matched with a large American-style fridge/freezer and wine cooler, making this a social hub for entertaining, while floor-to-ceiling bi-folding doors create an easy flow out to the courtyard. The kitchen also boasts an instant boiling water tap and a filtered water tap, a touch screen media system with wall-mounted television, music and security system.
LOWER GROUND FLOOR
Making your way down the stairs you note the cloakroom which, in-keeping with the rest of the house, is wrapped in beautiful marble. There is also a perfectly placed storage cupboard to conceal shoes and coats. In the long hallway on the lower level there is the main touch screen which connects to the audio/media system and there is access to the three bedrooms on this floor, all boasting en-suite facilities and dressing areas. The marble finish has been followed throughout each bathroom and all have fresh white suites and integrated media systems. Bedroom five, which is located towards the front of the property, has access to the front courtyard area, while the fourth bedroom, to the rear, is located beneath the courtyard garden and there is a glass section of the roof that allows natural light to wash over the room. Also on this floor is the laundry room with a fully fitted white gloss kitchen and white granite work surfaces, integrated NEFF appliances and a laundry shoot. Opposite is the children's play room with fitted storage that is ideal for toys. Equally, this room could be utilised as a gym or hobby room perhaps. Additionally, there are two utility rooms, one of which houses the media systems and the other the laundry machines.
FIRST FLOOR
Ascending to the first floor another long hallway runs along the centre of the house where once again there is the touch screen media system, laundry shoot to the lower ground floor and engineered Dutch oak flooring that works well with the simplicity of the white walls. Leading off the hall there are three striking bedrooms. The master suite is glamorous and luxurious, offering the ultimate space for comfort and relaxation. Beautiful book matched marble has been used throughout the suite which stretches from the front to the back of the house offering views over Victoria Park. The audio and lighting system allows you to change the mood of the room as you require, while the dressing room has been fitted with bespoke walnut veneered cupboards. Beyond is the en-suite with mirror-fronted 'his and her' wash basins, bath and a walk-in wet room-style shower cubical with monsoon shower head. Bedroom two is tastefully decorated and provides views over the park. The walk-in dressing room is fitted with bespoke glass-fronted wardrobes which compliment the engineered Dutch oak flooring. This leads to the en-suite with its beautiful roll top bath, Villeroy and Boch bathroom suite and marble walls and floor. The third bedroom has been finished to the same beautiful standard as the rest of the house with white walls, Dutch oak floor and a hand painted mural which fits in with the colour scheme of the room perfectly. The walk-in dressing area has bespoke fitted wardrobes, while the en-suite has marble-lined floors and walls plus a white bathroom suite.
SECOND FLOOR
The second floor is open plan with one end used as a study and the other a
SETTING THE SCENE
Glass doors from the kitchen at Lith Hall pull right back to reveal a terrace for sitting out on and enjoying summer lunches and drinks in the fresh air.
The smooth granite of the terrace, which ties in beautifully with the work surfaces in the kitchen, is at the same level as the kitchen floor, bringing continuity.
The garden is not huge but it is great for the children to play out in and for entertaining, said the owner.
But we do have the park on our doorstep - all 26 acres of it, which is wonderful when you live in London.
WITHIN EASY REACH
Just a stroll away from local shops, nice restaurants and wine bars and within easy reach of a number of good schools, life at Lith Hall has suited the family well.
We love living in the East End - it is a very exciting place to be at the moment, said the owner. We have places like Spitalfields and Columbia Road Market close by, and the new Westfield Stratford City shopping centre is a 10-minute walk away.
The Olympic site is also close to the property within a 10 minute bus or car ride meaning the house will have great access for the 2012 games. Hackney Marshes are close with a parkland area, while directly opposite the house is Victoria Park which recently held a small day music festival.
Hackney in East London is a vibrant and multicultural area, close to central London, which is within 15 minutes by underground tube. There are district line and central line stations at Mile End and Bethnal Green and London over ground services from Hackney Wick. Stratford is also close with central line and DLR links.
The owner explained that there are good road links to the A12 and M25, and it took him just 15 minutes to get into Tottenham and other parts of central London.
This is a great place to live for so many reasons, he added.
