The Story
Waking up every morning to the heavenly panorama before her, the owner of Sker Court still finds it hard to believe she has made her home at the spectacular property.
Built on land once intended for the home of Hollywood stars Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, the luxury abode sits in the most dramatic of locations, with uninterrupted views out over the Royal Porthcawl Golf Course and the Atlantic.
Years ago I lived nearby and my father and I would look up at the house as we walked down to the beach, she remembered. We used to imagine what the rooms were like behind the windows and wonder who lived there.
I never dreamed that one day I would live there myself.
PLACE OF LEGEND
Designed and built some 41 years ago, Sker Court, which features its own leisure complex and two self-contained annexes, is truly unique.
Named after the Viking settlement of Sker, uncovered on the beach below, and next door to Sker House, once said to have been home to the legendary Welsh Maid of Sker, it was created to be the residence of a local business man, and no stone was left unturned in ensuring every last detail was perfect.
His architect was from South Africa and was inspired by the breathtaking panoramic views and the outlook over the golf course, she said. It reminded him of home. The house was designed on plans of a South African hunting lodge, and on a summer's day, the surroundings could certainly be mistaken for an African plain.
STRIKING HOME
Sker Court may be expansive but it is also homely and welcoming, she stressed.
As you approach up the long, windy drive, it is simply spectacular. Everyone who comes here says they have never seen anything like it before, she said.
It is a large home but it is cosy. It offers the whole package - everything you could want.
Inside, the house has been substantially updated since the couple moved in and now boasts an exquisite finish throughout. From the ornate galleried reception hall area to the light-filled living spaces, and the hand-crafted oak kitchen, with its granite work surfaces, to the Clive Christian-style dressing room, all the furniture, fixtures and fittings are of an outstanding quality.
We also totally refurbished the leisure area, with its heated swimming pool, sauna, showers, changing room and gym, she said. The wet rooms are now in 'Mandarin' natural stone while some of the bathrooms have a more classical style, with roll-top baths.
SUNLIGHT OVER THE WATER
With two kitchens, catering for parties is easy. With the two self-contained annexes, guests or members of staff can be housed comfortably.
This is a wonderful house to have lots of people in, she said. We often have parties for over 50 guests. When we do, the entertainment suite complete with its own bar comes into its own - but very often everyone ends up in the kitchen!
With so much space and such flexibility, Sker Court could become anything from a private home to a retreat or hotel, she said.
This is very much a home of all seasons. In the summer, we can sit out on the balcony and enjoy the sunshine and the views, and in winter we can light the wood-burner and swim in the heated pool.
And she added: At any time of year, the views are absolutely spectacular. When I go, I will miss those, as well as the incredible sunsets.
Living here really is living the dream.
ACCOMMODATION
FIRST FLOOR
Walking up the striking curved slate steps, the impressive front entrance with its glazed wall provides an indication of what lies beyond. The split level reception hall is cavernous, with a vaulted ceiling and a wide staircase leading to the ground floor entertaining suite and up to the large reception area of the hall, which itself provides plenty of space for sofas and a fireplace. From here, full height double doors with coloured glazed panels guide to the stunning drawing room, which enjoys panoramic views across the golf course to the sea beyond. The view can also be appreciated from the balcony which continues across the back of the property and links to the master bedroom. The drawing room can be utilised as two separate areas, with the more intimate side benefitting from a multi-fuel burner. One end of this vast room flows to an inner hallway, whilst from the other end, tall double doors open into the formal dining room which can easily accommodate a sixteen seater table.
From the dining room there is access to the kitchen/breakfast room, as well as a summer room which offers views across the garden. The luxurious kitchen/breakfast room boasts bespoke oak cabinets with opulent black, copper flecked granite work surfaces and a range of Neff appliances including a coffee machine, dishwasher, double oven and hob. There is also access to a 'baroque' styled cloakroom, walk-in pantry, a fully fitted second kitchen or preparation room (which could be incorporated back into the annexe), and a snug. This snug could also be used as the sitting room for an annexe, as there are stairs down to a hall on the ground floor. This hall has its own access from the side of the house and leads to two beautifully presented bedrooms and a modern wet room that is finished in natural stone tiles with a stone basin.
Returning to the inner hallway, three further bedrooms can be discovered, as well as a relaxing sitting room and an office which has the original ornate wood panelling with two secret cupboards. The master suite offers total luxury, from its fully fitted dressing room to the 'his and hers' en-suite, and for complete decadence there is a claw foot bath on a raised floor - a fabulous place to relax and unwind while appreciating the distant sea views. The adjacent junior suite also benefits from its own dressing room, along with a study and a beautifully appointed en-suite bathroom. A further double bedroom enjoys plenty of wardrobe space. Finally from the inner hall there are stairs descending into the beautiful swimming pool complex.
GROUND FLOOR
The fabulous ground floor comprises a cellar, integral garage, cloakroom and the entertainment suite. This suite is a glorious expanse for anyone who entertains on a regular basis and is surprisingly large. Not only does it have space for a full size snooker table, but it also has its own bar, a dining area, television or cinema area, and there is even room for a dance floor! From the entertainment suite, a hall with full height glazed windows and a sliding door provides access to an attractive covered seating section, ideal for alfresco dining. You will also find two generously proportioned bedrooms and the swimming pool complex.
The inviting bedrooms are both of a good size and are simply perfect for guests as they are served not only by a delightful 'Jack and Jill' bathroom, but they also have access to a modern, fully fitted kitchenette with breakfast bar. The hall eventually leads to the swimming pool complex which has been completely refurbished by the present owners, who have re-tiled the whole area with natural stone from 'Mandarin' in Cardiff. They have added a relaxing mezzanine level which overlooks the pool and is accessed by a spiral staircase, below which there is plenty of space for a hot tub or Jacuzzi. Adjacent to the pool is a gym, which has a glazed wall looking onto the pool and a luxurious 'spa' area which again has been re-tiled in natural stone. This space comes complete with a drying area with 'his and hers' basins, a modern cloakroom, a wet room with two showers and a sauna.
SETTING THE SCENE
Sker Court sits neatly in its gardens, overlooking the Royal Porthcawl Golf Course which numerous golfing magazines class as one of the top 50 golf courses in the world.
We particularly enjoy sitting out on the balcony and looking over the sixth, seventh and eighth tees. It is particularly convenient whenever there is a tournament.
It's not from every house that you can watch Ian Woosnam play or have Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy wave up at you!
And in 2014, they will be holding the Senior Open World Championship at the club.
The property is approached by a pair of electric gates from West Road, and a long a driveway with lawned areas to both sides continues to a second pair of electric gates. The driveway continues past a large, planted rockery and winds its way to a turning circle with a raised planter and gives front access to the garage. The driveway with lawned garden to the side, also continues to the rear of the property and ends in a further parking area and provides rear access to the garage. Integral to the property, the garage offers a 'drive through' facility with electric up and over doors at both ends and provides secure, covered parking for three to four cars. Two more spaces could be added with the removal of a built in storage room, if required.
The front of the property has been recently re-laid by the present owners with beautiful slate tiles, which continue past the water feature and up the steps to the front entrance. This large front garden is completely private and now provides an attractive eating and entertaining area. Additionally you will find a storage shed or small greenhouse, a rear lawn and a raised timber deck.
The garden is very nice but there is a lot more someone could do with it if they chose, she said.
WITHIN EASY REACH
The property is adjacent to the coast and also backs onto the 12th tee of the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, home to the Senior Open Championship in 2014. For avid golfers there are two further golf courses within two miles, namely Grove Golf Club and the Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club. The coastline in this area is a beach lover's paradise with over twenty bays and beaches within 20 miles of the house. These include Rest Bay and Sandy Bay in Porthcawl, Sker, Ogmore, Margam and the Mumbles. The seaside town of Porthcawl is the closest town and can be reached in under 10 minutes (2.5 miles), whilst more amenities can be found in the larger town of Bridgend just a short drive away (7.2 miles).
The property is conveniently positioned for anyone requiring access to the M4 corridor, as junction 37 can be reached in less than 10 minutes (2.5 miles). From here Swansea (17 miles) can be reached in 25 minutes and Cardiff (27 miles) in 35 minutes. The Severn crossing can be reached in approximately 50 minutes (49 miles), with Bristol (66 miles) an hour and 10 minutes away. For those wishing to commute there is a good high speed rail link to London from Swansea and Cardiff, and Cardiff Airport is also within easy reach, just 20 miles away.

Heading west on the M4, take the slip road at junction 37 and at the roundabout take the first exit onto the A4229. Take the second exit at the first roundabout, and then take the third exit at the next roundabout onto the A4229. Take the immediate first right onto Heol Drewi and continue to the t-junction.
