THE STORY
Chandrika Dassanayake describes the interior of her sumptuous home as traditional with a modern twist.
She and her husband Kamal had the four-bedroom, five-reception room house, which includes a self-contained annexe, with its own entrance, built to their exact specifications and with their own requirements in mind.
We wanted it to be spacious, with lots of rooms, and of a high quality, she said. It was also important to us that it felt open and had an attractive frontage.
This is a sought-after location and we had a corner plot, which meant we could design a house that had a good outlook from every angle.
NATURAL INFLUENCE
The couple had been living in Milton Keynes for 15 years and were well aware of the benefits of Walton Park.
It was affluent and had all the amenities you could require, and it is a lovely, tranquil, safe area, she said.
Caldecotte Lake is just around the corner. You can see it from upstairs.
You really get a sense of the four seasons here. There's lots of wildlife and there are all sorts of birds - at the same time, it is very accessible for Milton Keynes, the motorway and London.
CREATIVE KITCHEN
It was a challenge coming up with a design for the perfect home, she admitted, but the family has been pleased with the results.
Over the years the property has evolved and been developed further.
The kitchen was renovated and redesigned a year ago, and now features a lot of high quality appliances. There is a large island, a huge amount of storage and there are good work areas, she said.
We also have a separate 'spice kitchen,' which is where we do all our cooking when we use spices and that is ideal when we are entertaining.
INTERIOR DESIGN
There is a good flow between reception areas, and French windows from the back of the house open up on to the terrace and garden.
This is a large family house and, with five reception rooms, there is always lots of space, said Chandrika. All the rooms are light and airy.
Spaces on the ground floor have all recently been redecorated, on the advice of an interior designer.
I would say the style is traditional but with a modern twist. We have used products from the likes of Zoffany and Farrow & Ball.
GREAT ENTERTAINMENT
The magnificent entrance hall immediately sets a tone of opulence. This then moves on through the drawing room, sitting room and other living spaces.
The drawing room is elegant. We used to have an inglenook fireplace but we have now made this more modern and have a wall mounted flat screen Gas fire.
The spacious reception areas are perfect for entertaining - as is the gloriously sunny garden, with its breeze house.
We have had some great parties with our friends here, she said. We can have people milling about indoors and outdoors.
There is often quite a crowd for a party, and people often comment on how nice the house is and what an uplifting, positive feeling there seems to be here.
ACCOMMODATION
Ground Floor
This striking home is approached via a large driveway and once through the front door you can immediately see the quality of finish. An attractive entrance hall with tiled flooring gives views to the first floor galleried landing. The family room is located directly to the right as you enter with views over the front and wood effect flooring. Next to the family room is the sitting room with a feature inglenook fireplace, French double doors out to the garden and side view windows letting in lots of light. The dining room which is entered via double doors is of fantastic size, perfect for entertaining, and allows access into the kitchen and the garden. The kitchen/breakfast room is finished to a very high specification with black granite work surfaces and a large central island. There is a door to the rear garden and archway into the utility which continues the high standard with ample storage space. The studio, which is currently a beauty salon, has a separate front door and access into a lobby area. There is a window to the side, wood effect flooring, storage cupboards and a door to the two piece downstairs cloakroom with a further door opening into the main entrance hall. Lastly there is a study with a window to the side and wood effect flooring.
First Floor
The first floor, accessed via the staircase found in the main entrance hall, has a beautiful galleried landing and four windows overlooking the front. Bedroom's three and four are of similar size both with built in wardrobes. Bedroom three has views over the rear whilst bedroom four overlooks the front. Bedroom two has two storage cupboards, built in wardrobes and a three piece en-suite. The master bedroom has multiple aspect views, a dressing room with built in wardrobes and a four piece well finished en-suite. Lastly there is a modern five piece family bathroom.
SETTING THE SCENE
To the front of the home is an attractive block paved driveway with parking for at least eight cars in front of the double garage. The Beales Lane house sits on a plot of 0.23 acres, which is sun-filled and has been beautifully landscaped.
We do get sunshine here all year round but the garden is amazing in the summer. This is when we just love hosting parties, said Chandrika.
We have a breeze house, which is a lovely place to sit and chat with friends. On chilly evenings, it can be heated, and on warm nights we can sit out there for hours.
The terrace is a great spot for sitting out and enjoying meals, and there is a water feature.
There is a real sense of privacy and tranquillity at the house, and a sense of seclusion within Walton Park.
