leave Bishop's Stortford in an easterly direction on the A120 dual carriageway and travel to Great Dunmow. In the centre of Great Bardfield, opposite the Vine public house bear right and follow the road taking the second turning on the left signposted to Waltham Cross. Follow this country lane to a crossroads where you turn right signposted Shalford. Follow this lane for approximately 2 miles until on a sharp right hand bend you see a sign saying Electric Gates (on white gates), at this point turn sharp left off the road onto a concrete road that disappears across the field - distinct because of a line of poplar trees to the right of the driveway to Ashwell Hall.
