The PropertyForming a major part of this historic and important country house, 1 Eshton Hall is a breathtaking apartment offering exceptional space reminiscent of a bygone era yet with the trappings of modern living all with a dramatic backdrop overlooking the original park land and Yorkshire Dales National Park from almost every window.
The apartment which occupies both the ground and first floors of the south east corner of the Hall is accessed off the staircase hall housing an impressive Oak staircase, straight into the open plan living/dining room formally the drawing room and major portion of the library. The room is dominated by large picture windows and a bay window containing a contemporary glass and timber staircase to the first floor. The entire room enjoys an extremely fine plaster moulded
ceiling and original marble fireplace. At one end of the room a half height wall hides a fully fitted kitchen with a range of integrated appliances under a granite worktop. The ground floor also has a cloakroom.
The first floor has been cleverly converted to accommodate two good size bedrooms,
both with fine views and both with fitted wardrobes. Adjoining the principal bedroom is a good sized bathroom with separate shower whilst the second bedroom benefits from an en-suite shower room. The two bedrooms are connected by a rear landing with a separate access on to the communal staircase. Also on this floor is a utility room.
Historical Note
A house has stood on the site of Eshton Hall for many centuries, and for the most part has remained in one family since the mid 1600’s. The current Hall was completed around 1826 for Mathew Wilson the then Deputy Lieutenant of the West Riding. His wife Margaret had a daughter, Frances, from a previous marriage and it was Frances who would have a lasting effect on the Hall.
Frances, exceptionally wealthy in her own right, built up one of Europe’s leading private book collections.
At its height the collection consumed most of the rooms in the Hall but principally the Drawing Room, now part of 1 Eshton Hall and the original Library. The collection came to the attention of Charlotte Bronte who is reputed to have visited Frances and the Hall on many occasions. It has also been suggested that Queen Victoria once stayed at Eshton Hall, although this may simply be local hearsay.
Over the last century the Hall has been a private house, highly regarded boarding school and most recently a nursing home. Planning was obtained in 2003 to convert the building and Burley Developments, working in close conjunction with English Heritage painstakingly refurbished the Hall.
The Location
Situated just outside the village of Gargrave which enjoys a range of local services, Eshton Hall is located at the gateway to the south western Yorkshire Dales, close to the village of Malham famous for its much visited cove and tarn.
Despite being in such an attractive rural setting Eshton is conveniently located close to the Skipton which has a wide range of shops, restaurants and cultural facilities, there is also a railway station providing direct services to and from London Kings Cross as well as regional Northern Rail services providing regular commuter services to Leeds.
Skipton is almost equidistance for the M1 & M6 motorways connected by the A59 and A65 providing access to Leeds and Harrogate to the east and The Lake District and Preston/Manchester to the east/southeast.
Local sporting facilities include golf courses at Skipton, Keighley and Riddlesden. The area is famous for its numerous outdoor pursuits and there are numerous walks and bridleways in the local area.
Outside
The Hall is situated in attractive landscaped grounds entered via substantial, original, wrought iron electric gates, which gives access to the main driveway. The apartment benefits from a private garage with electricity and an allocated parking space at the front of the Hall. To the
side of the Hall there is a communal terrace area.
