Castle Gogar is reached by a long, tree lined drive off the A8. The castle is set in approximately 3.656 acres of its own grounds with magnificent mature trees in a private setting in the designated green belt. Edinburgh city centre is six miles away and the airport is close by.
Castle Gogar is a magnificent castle with traditional Scots Baronial faƧades. The southern elevation features a front facing crow step gable with spired roofs to the corbelled towers either side. There are dormer windows with stone inscriptions and battlements above the central tower. Castle Gogar is believed to date from 1625 when it was built as a traditional L plan castle by the architect William Ayton for John Cowper. The property was extended in the mid 1700s and again in the 19th century when the Scots Baronial features such as the tower and turrets were added. Castle Gogar was owned for over 200 years by the Steel-Maitlands, until the death of the last family member in 2002. The Castle was restored by the previous owners who acquired it in 2003 whilst the present owners have made a number of considerable improvements. Internally the castle has been immaculately restored but retains many original features. These include the vaulted crypt (or reception hall) on the ground floor, turnpike staircases, turrets with arrow slots and battlements. The Georgian rooms include a magnificent double bow ended first floor drawing room and beautiful panelled hall and dining room. The refurbishment incorporated everything one could ask for in a luxurious modern home. All the windows have been replaced with Ventrola sash and case windows and a modern heating system has been installed behind period style radiator covers. New panelling has been added using solid European oak. There is CAT 5 cabling to all rooms and intelligent lighting to the master bedroom and drawing room. The bathrooms are by Villeroy & Boch and Heritage, and the
magnificent kitchen and master bedroom are by Clive Christian.

Gardens and Grounds
The main gardens lie to the south of Castle Gogar and comprise extensive lawns interspersed with fine mature trees. There is a stone wall, lined with maturing trees, around the gardens and the original Castle Gogar gate pillars are at the entrance with automatic electric gates. A tarmaced drive with an avenue of fine stone urns leads to the turning circle in front of the castle. A paved pathway leads to a well to the side of the garden whilst a delightful rose garden has been created alongside a rockery garden and a large outside dining area and patio. The tarmaced drive continues round to the rear of the castle where there is a monobloc courtyard, with triple car port, outside the utility room and wrought iron gates leading back into the cobbled courtyard. There is a gravelled storage area behind where the temporary outbuildings have been created, incorporating a gym and games room as well as timber hay shed adjacent. Post and rail fencing creates a boundary to the triangular field beyond which is fringed by trees and the Gogar Burn. The field has been divided into four paddocks, all of which have self filling water troughs. Also incorporated into the field is a state-of-the-art floodlit Menage and a timberstable block with power and water, three loose boxes and a tack room.
The gates and drive to Castle Gogar are off the A8 dual carriageway on the left hand side as you approach the Gogar Roundabout from Edinburgh Airport. Travelling from Edinburgh, take the A8 dual carriageway west from the Gogar Roundabout. Take the first exit on the left, turn first right at the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters, turn right again at the roundabout and follow this road to the bridge over the dual carriageway. Rejoin the A8 dual carriageway, heading towards Edinburgh, and the gates and drive to Castle Gogar are on the left hand side.
