Gazing up at the stars and satellites as the candles flicker in the darkness, the owners of the home, Karen and Peter, can be unaware of how late it really is.
In the summer, they often entertain in their garden, chatting to friends or just the two of them through balmy evenings, and relishing the peace.
We can be out there with friends and then suddenly it is 4am! said Karen. It feels incredibly private here. It is wonderful.
And she added: My dream home was always a barn, with a gravel driveway and a gate. When we came to see this house, we loved it straight away.


The property is just 20 years old but was built on 17th and 18th century foundations.
It was an old cow barn that was knocked down and rebuilt in the same style, she explained. It was designed to look like the same barn and some of the bricks and other materials were reclaimed in the construction.
The fireplace in the drawing room was made from reclaimed bricks and there is an old beam that was once a ship's hull which was used in the old barn.
This gives it a very individual feel. I knew I wanted to live here within about three minutes of stepping inside!


Inside, the four-bedroom house is imposing, Karen said. Not only is it well laid out but it has a sense of drama about it too.
When I first entered the barn I looked up and saw the galleried landing and was then taken into the drawing room, and I was so impressed. It was really big but was also cosy and had a lovely, warm feeling, she remembered.
It was well decorated when we moved in but we did things like take the carpets out of the en-suite and family bathrooms and replace it then with tiles.
It does now have a more contemporary style inside. Everything is fairly neutral, which keeps it quite bright.


The kitchen has a cottage-like appeal while the drawing room has a farmhouse ambience.
I love relaxing in there, especially in the winter when the fire is blazing. When we are in there chatting, having a few glasses of wine, and sitting on the big comfortable sofas, it is just gorgeous, she said.
It is brilliant for entertaining. We can seat nine people quite comfortably on the sofas and have had some superb parties. We tend to host Christmas Day here and there's usually about 10 of us. It is really easy.


In the summer Karen and Peter sit out with friends in their sheltered garden - eating, sun bathing and talking. In the evening they light up the fire pit and sit around it.
Wherever they are in the house, there is a sense of peace and tranquillity, she said. It's so private - no one can see in.
The main bedroom is cosy and relaxing and from the kitchen we can see down to the river, she said. We are on a bit of a hill and, in the summer, from the hallway, it looks very green outside.
The area in which we live is surrounded by countryside so can go out and walk across the fields whenever we like.
And she added: There is potential here to change the layout if someone else wants to. We have enjoyed it as it is, however.
When we come home from work we really look forward to turning up the drive, parking the car and shutting the door behind us. We can lock the world out and just relax.


Stepping through the front door you will find yourself in the welcoming reception hall and from here you can access all three reception rooms, the cloakroom, utility and kitchen. The sitting room boasts dual aspect views, a feature fireplace offering a wealth of character and doors out to the garden. Returning to the hall, double doors open into the dining room which has views to the rear and is a great space for entertaining guests. Next to the dining room is a useful utility room with a stable door to the garden and adjacent is the study, perfect for those wanting to work from home. At the heart of the home is the delightful kitchen, where you will find an extensive range of base and wall mounted cabinets, along with a butler sink.


Ascending the staircase that is situated next to the sitting room you will reach the landing, where four bedrooms are waiting to be explored. Bedrooms three and four are both of a similar size and enjoy Velux windows to the rear. Bedroom two has Velux roof windows, a built in wardrobe and cupboard. The master bedroom is well proportioned and has built in wardrobes, Velux roof windows and an en-suite. Lastly the family bathroom is located opposite bedroom three and benefits from a bath and shower, a calming haven in which to relax and unwind.

The garden at the Waterhouse Close barn has been ideal for Karen and Peter, offering them a private suntrap to enjoy with family and friends.
It is not huge but it has a courtyard, grass, shrubs and trees. In the spring and summer it really comes to life, she said.
We added more plants to the garden and there is a stunning light green tree in one corner.
And Karen added: It is very easy to keep tidy. We often sit out there and watch the squirrels.
The garden is enclosed and has a terrace, while a side gate guides to a driveway with parking for two cars and single garage.

We can get to bars and restaurants and I can be at work in just seven minutes, Karen said. We can reach the M1 in five or six minutes, and it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to get to Northampton and 45 minutes to reach Coventry.
Bedford and Milton Keynes also offer good shopping and leisure facilities, and from major nearby towns and routes, it is easy to get to London.

From the M1 exit at junction 14, then take the A509 exit to Milton Keynes/Newport Pagnell. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto London Road. Continue to follow London Road and go through one roundabout. At the next roundabout take the first exit onto Tickford Street. At the next roundabout take the second exit onto Tickford Street/B526. Proceed along the B526 and then turn left onto Waterhouse Close, where the home will be on the right hand side.
