The Priors Lodge is one of a number of buildings that grew up around Battle Abbey. The Abbots Cottage and The Priors Lodge were originally one house and believed to date back to the 14th century although there is evidence of parts that may date back as far as the 11th century. Indeed some of the ancient masonry that exists in the cellar is constructed of similar stone to the Abbey itself. The Abbots Cottage and Priors Lodge were resided in by John Hammond in AD 1538. He was the last Abbot who retired after the suspension of the monastery of Battle Abbey.
