History
The area is rich in history as Whitley was first mentioned about the year 1100 when Henry I conferred it with other possessions on the Priory of Tynemouth, being referred to in ancient documents and maps before that date as Witelei or Wytheleye.
For over 400 years, Whitley passed on to various holders, until the subsequent marriage of the Duke of Somerset to Elizabeth, the eleventh Earl of Northumberland. Whitley subsequently passed by inheritance to her grand-daughter who married a Yorkshire baronet, Sir Hugh Smithson; who was created the Duke of Northumberland. Whitley has since been retained by descendants, and the present Duke is the Lord of the manor and principal land owner.
A charter was granted to become a municipal borough in 1944. This was then abolished in 1972, with the main part including Whitley and Monkseaton forming part of the Metropolitan borough of North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear.

Attractions
Whitley Bay was famous for its permanent seaside fairground called The Spanish City, which was demolished for redevelopment in the late 1990’s.
The Fairground returns to the town on Bank Holidays, but is located on ‘the Links’. The fabulous Spanish City Dome is to become the centrepiece of a multimillion pound ‘regeneration’ of the sea front area, which will include hotel and leisure developments.
Also in the town is St. Mary’s Lighthouse, The Playhouse, Park View Shopping centre, the main shopping street of Park View and numerous bars and restaurants.
Whitley Bay is 9 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne and is connected to the Tyne & Wear Metro link, with stations at Whitley Bay, Monkseaton, West Monkseaton and Tynemouth. It is approximately a 25 minute journey from Newcastle centre on the metro.
The local Newspaper, The News Guardian, is published once a week from its offices in the town. It is printed at the Journal in nearby Newcastle Upon Tyne.
