This astonishing house on a large, private plot in Ispwich, Suffolk was designed by the celebrated architect Birkin Haward in 1960. Recently listed by English Heritage, it is noted as "a dramatic and stylish building that was influential on many architects".

Built by Haward for himself and his four children, it was designed as a 6-bedroom house with further accommodation including a large ground-floor hall, a first-floor living area, a workshop and a studio space. The layout remains the same today (with a kitchen and dining room also on the first floor) but could be easily adapted to a number of uses. Perhaps the most exciting and impressive feature of the house is the double-height central space that is largely glazed from floor-to-ceiling. As with the majority of the house, the space floods with light and gives great views of the verdant surroundings. "There is a feeling of space and freedom throughout the house", as one writer wrote following a visit. The plot is approximately one acre in size and features a large, level lawn area that surrounds the house, area of woodland, a short driveway as well as a car port and storage areas.

The house can be found in the sought-after Christchurch Park area of Ipswich. The high street is approximately half a mile from the house (accessed by foot via the park) and the train station can be reached by car in 5 - 10 minutes. Trains run from Ipswich to London Liverpool Street in just over one hour. Ipswich is Suffolk's county town and has been an important centre since medieval times. It is on the River Orwell and has an attractive docks area. It has a wide variety of shops, restaurants and services. Also notable is the fact that the youngest Grade I-listed building in Britain occupies a prominent site in the town - Norman Foster's Willis Building (1970). There are a number of highly regarded schools in the Christchurch Park area. The Suffolk countryside and coastal towns such as Aldeburgh and Southwold are easily accessible from the house by car.
