Sheffield is a truly unique city. It is one of the UK's largest cities with all the conveniences you might expect from a major metropolitan city, such as excellent shopping facilities and a fantastic range of bars, restaurants and venues. Yet the city is surrounded by the scenic countryside of the Peak District National Park, providing a haven of beauty and tranquillity just minutes away.
The steel city of Sheffield. Sheffield nestles in some of the best rambling country available, surrounded by a ring of hills and bordered at the western edge by the Peak District.
Historically, Sheffield was a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, however, the city has since grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wide economic base.
The population of the City of Sheffield was approximately 525,800 in 2006 and is one of the eight largest English cities outside London.
The extent to which Sheffield affected the world steel industry cannot be underestimated - both silver plating and stainless steel were pioneered and developed in the city. These days Sheffield is host to many hi-tech companies and even Boeing, the aircraft giant, has works at the city's new manufacturing park on the outskirts.
The city has no less than two football league teams and, of course, the customary 'friendly' rivalry exists between fans of Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday - although United's followers have had more to cheer lately, such as a recent FA Cup semi-final appearance.
Aside from football, the city has achieved sporting fame for it's annual hosting of the Snooker World Championships at the Crucible Theatre, and for the Don Valley athletics stadium which has seen performances from many of Britain's star athletes past and present - from Daley Thompson to Dame Kelly Holmes.
Sheffield is linked into the national motorway network via the M1 and M18 motorways. The M1 skirts the north-east of the city, linking Sheffield with London to the south and Leeds to the north.
Major railway routes through Sheffield railway station include the Midland Main Line, which links the city to London via the East Midlands, the Cross Country Route which links the East of Scotland and Northeast of England with the West Midlands and the Southwest, and the lines linking Liverpool and Manchester with Hull and East Anglia.
Sheffield has two universities, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. The two combined bring about 54,000 students to the city every year.
The Sheffield Walk of Fame in the City Centre honours famous Sheffield residents past and present in a similar way to the Hollywood version.
Sheffield has a reputed 2 million trees and is known as the greenest city in Europe. Consequently, there are many parks and woods throughout the city and beyond. There are 83 parks in Sheffield (13 'City' Parks, 20 'District' Parks and 50 'Local' Parks) which are located throughout the city
