      Buckingham: an abundance of history

      Thought to have been founded by Bucca, the Anglo Saxon leader, in the 7th century, Buckingham has a vast history, and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book as far back as 1086. The town received its charter from Queen Mary in 1554 and is also thought to be the final resting place of St. Rumbold, whose name is given to many local road names and buildings in the area.

      In the heart of town is the magnificent Buckingham Old Gaol, now the town's museum. Originally built in 1748 and designed by local architect George Gilbert Scott - whose name is also given to local road names - the Gaol has not only previously been a gaol, it has also been home to the police, fire brigade and an antiques shop.

      Brimming with culture

      The town still plays host to markets on a Tuesday and Saturday each week, as well as being home to three football teams, a rugby club, cricket club and the Swan Leisure Centre, which boasts a swimming pool and rock climbing facilities. There is also the well-equipped garden centre to the north of town, just opposed to the established Buckingham golf course.

      Close by, the beautiful National Trust-owned Stowe Landscape Gardens provide a peaceful spot for a relaxing walk, and for those more inclined to an adrenaline rush, the Silverstone Circuit is also not far away.
