      The ancient, historic market town of Ashby (with its famous 12th century castle) almost certainly dates back to Roman times. Later, in the early 19th century, it became a spa town. Many of the Georgian-style buildings that you now see were built to accommodate visitors to the Baths. Today, Ashby is a thriving and bustling town and enjoys a wide range of good shops, schools, pubs, churches and local amenities. The local upper school, Ashby School (previously Ashby Grammar School), is a mixed comprehensive school for 14 to 18-year old children that was founded in 1567. The local high school, Ivanhoe College, for 11 to 14 tear olds, is named after the historical novel 'Ivanhoe' by Sir Walter Scott. Manor House School is an independent day school in the centre of Ashby for girls and boys aged 4 to 16, and pupils travel to the school from a wide geographical area. The town is within the boundaries of the National Forest and the outdoor Forest Experience is a year-round opportunity to relax and have fun with family and friends - all in a mature and growing woodland setting. The nearby M42 motorway gives easy access to the M1, M5 and M6 and many Midland towns and cities. The town is also convenient for the international airports at Nottingham East Midlands and Birmingham.
