Solihull - The town in the country!

Located in the heart of the UK, just nine miles from Birmingham, Solihull is the gateway to the West Midlands, and one of the region's most prosperous towns. It is blessed with a thriving local economy and offers a beguiling blend of old and new buildings, with some lovely outlying hamlets and villages.

Its Latin motto is Urbs in Rure, or Town in Country, and that still holds true today, with Solihull offering convenient access to glorious countryside and vibrant city alike.

Property in Solihull consists of a variety of different types of housing, but in particular there are a large number of semis and detached town houses, with few terraces. Many of the area's larger developments were built in the 1950s and 1960s.

Retail therapy paradise

Solihull is also known for offering some serious shopping opportunities! There was first a market here in 1242, and today the area is home to the West Midlands' only John Lewis store. Touchwood Shopping Centre offers a relaxed and cosmopolitan ambience, plus enough top brands and delightful retail outlets to keep the most demanding shopper happy. There's also a multi-screen cinema here. More retail therapy is on offer on Solihull's High Street, where stacks of household names are to be found. The nearby Solihull Arts Centre has a 336-seater theatre with a varied programme offering a mixture of touring shows, musicals, poetry and other events. The borough is also home to the National Exhibition Centre, often wrongly thought to be in Birmingham itself. With great leisure facilities on the doorstep, from outdoor skating to sailing on the Olton Reservoir and including a number of local parks and nature reserves, residents won't be short of things for all the family to enjoy. In terms of education, there are five universities within 16 miles of the town, as well as Solihull College and the sixth form college on the edge of town. Independent schools include Solihull School, established in 1560. In December 2004, the council was awarded £80m to transform six schools. With so much on offer in the area, this town offers a great quality of life for families and is ideal for people who work in Birmingham but don't want to live there.
