Anybody who has already bought a property in Cyprus will be able to tell you the problems they may have experienced with regards to getting the Title Deeds to their new property.

To cut a very long story short, you are safe when it comes to buying a property in Cyprus as the Land Registry Office controls all the title deeds in Cyprus. However, there is an enormous backlog in the office, meaning that home owners can wait as long as 5 or 6 years before they receive their title deeds. You might not see this as a problem, after all, you have just bought a home abroad, and of course you are going to be there in 6 years time.

The only problem is if for any reason you need to move or sell the property quickly – perhaps you want to move back to the UK for health issues or you simply need the cash. You can sell a property without title deeds however most new property buyers will look to buy a property with deeds rather than one without. Selling quickly could prove to be difficult.

A lot of caution and research needs to be done if you are thinking of moving to Cyprus, and don’t believe everything your estate agent tells you. If in doubt, get it in writing!
