The town of Burry Ports sits on the northern shore of the Loughor Estuary with far-reaching views over the Carmarthen Bay to the north and Gower Peninsula to the south. It is approximately five miles west of Llanelli and 15 miles south of Carmarthen. The town enjoys good road communication links, being on the A484, and has a railway station on the Wales & West line.

The town developed during the Industrial Revolution but has in recent years become more of a satellite town to the nearby centre of Llanelli and Carmarthen, with a good level of tourism being enjoyed due to its close proximity to the Pembrey Country Park, Millennium Coastal Path and other nearby attractions including Ffos Las Racecourse. The town also benefits from its harbour which is used by small leisure craft, and has recently been purchased by a private company promising much onward investment.
