The coal mining industry was at its height during the 1800s, with railway lines built to transport the coal from the mines. The mines closed during the 1980s and many parts of the town have since been redeveloped and now boast a variety of modern shops and restaurants.

Nearby are many attractive towns and villages, including Whitwick, Ravenstone, Thornton, Bagworth, Heather, Hugglescote and Newton Burgoland. To the east, lies Charnwood Forest.

There is a wide choice of shops in the area from High Street brands to family run businesses and places to eat range from traditional pubs to oriental takeaways and fast foods.
