Description

SHORT LET Central Studio shares funky wet room, designed with stained glass window with river view

In Studio Melissa you can sit back in an antique South African stinkwood armchair with cowhide seat and look south and east over the river and footbridge to the pool beyond where canoeists disappear mysteriously into a tunnel in Folly Bridge, emerging far downstream, out of sight. The Dutch-born artist Charles Gassner offers a spectacular abstract acrylic painting above the mantel piece. The water theme is maintained by a dazzling pen ink drawing on the southern wall: 'Currents' by Paul du Toit. The kitchenette is equipped with and all the elegant necessities of city living. There is superfast fibre optic broadband and flatscreen TV/DVD. Chairs and tables by the river allow guests to watch the passing river life. Only five minutes walk from the top of the High Street, the colleges and shops, Folly Bridge House lets you be in the bright lights in a moment and yet return to the tranquillity of the river.

Folly Bridge House is an Oxford landmark and has been beautifully restored by a potter and a photographer. They describe it as 'eco chic'. Guests can enjoy their collection of modern art and ceramics. A crenellated Georgian tower standing in the River Thames at the point of the original 900 AD oxen ford, it conjures all the romance of the city. This is the spot where Alice in Wonderland was invented by Lewis Carroll. On Folly Bridge, the 13th century philosopher and alchemist Roger Bacon had a tower. From the roof, the River Thames and the dreaming spires of the city spread out before you.
