Description
Longbrook Street is an old thoroughfare leading you out of the city. From John Lewis it runs due north, past the university and the smart residential area of Pennsylvania. Many of the houses here front the street, with little space. But number 82 is set back, giving you both privacy and room to breathe. Despite the central location, you won't be bothered by the Friday night crowd outside.
Residents enjoy a reserved parking spot and there is also some visitor parking. Pulling up outside, everyone notices the unusual turret on the third floor and the building's gorgeous, intricate terracotta tiles. You'll see flat 7's dormer bay window peering out over the slanted roof, then up and down the street.
Take the stairs and you'll soon find yourself inside that same room, looking out over the rooftops. There's a lovely built-in wooden bench here, perfect for grabbing a book and watching the world go by down below. Above your head is a long roof beam with an interesting inscription - it marks the building of the top two floors in the 1880s.
As well as this living room, we have a hallway, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a bright, sunny kitchen. There's some cupboard and storage space as well.
The flat (and the whole building) is Grade 2 listed. That means any changes must protect its historic and cultural value. But you don't usually need consent to update a bathroom, or replace any kitchen cupboards that already exist.
There are some lovely historic features here, including picture rails and skirting boards. The solid wooden windows are in good nick, with smart black catches and latches. The flat's new owners will probably want to replace carpets and think about their own fresh colour scheme.
The building itself has a fascinating history. The bottom two floors were built in 1864 by Harry Hems, a well-known local sculptor, then added to later. Hems ran a large workshop in the city which made woodwork and sculpture for churches. You can see much of his collection in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, just down the road. But if a good meal is more your thing, Harry's restaurant is just a stone's throw away on the main street.
Flat 7 has everything on your doorstep, from department stores to bookshops, pubs and great cafes. The walk or cycle down to the quay is traffic-free, through the pedestrianised area. And with Exeter Central train station and dozens of bus stops just five minutes away, you might even think about living without a car.
