Description

LIFE ON THE BEACH

For almost 20 years this has been an enjoyable and happy family home for our current vendors. An elegant three-storey, five bedroom, Edwardian home. Located at the southern end of Seaview Avenue. Tastefully decorated, light and spacious with high ceilings - typical of a house of this period. This is attractive home and only a short walk to the beach and waterfront. OFFERED WITH NO ONWARD CHAIN

HISTORY

Throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries, West Mersea was focused more on its fishing and boating activities and famous for its renowned Oysters. Only in the early 20th Century did it develop more residentially and start to become popular as a seaside resort and attraction for sailing. This house, which is just a short stroll from the beach, is believed to have been one of the first to be built on the avenue and would have originally been surrounded by farmland. One of the older ‘original’ houses on Seaview Avenue where there are a complementary mix of homes of all ages and all sizes.

This home has an intriguing past. Built around 1900 and at one time is thought to have been home to the famous writer Margery Allingham. It is likely that this was her family home where she is said to have gained inspiration for her first novel, the adventure story Blackkerchief Dick, published in 1923. Allingham, who was a writer of detective fiction, went on to be known for her tales featuring the gentleman sleuth Albert Campion.

ACCOMMODATION

Entered via an open porch, on the ground floor the property has a beautiful hall which is light with high ceilings, that leads to the large, bay-fronted lounge/diner, with features fireplace with integral log burning stove. This room has been converted from two separate rooms and further enhances the feeling of space. To the rear, originally two rooms – a kitchen and dining room, has now be opened up to create good size stylish kitchen/diner that leads to the conservatory and downstairs shower room. Light and opening up onto the rear decked patio the conservatory is a perfect area to relax at any time of the day - morning coffee and toast, snack for lunch or simply chilling out reading a latest novel or perhaps attempting to complete the Sunday crossword.

The main reception room and the kitchen/breakfast - dining room have been outstanding entertaining spaces, says our vendor. "We often have entertained 10 to 12 people”.

On the first floor are three double bedrooms, a single bedroom and the family bathroom. On the second floor, the current vendors undertook a superb loft conversion, which has great views over towards the sea. This can be a fifth bedroom, but currently used an office and second sitting room: there is plenty of space in here for a large corner sofa and desk, and, with Velux windows it is a lovely, light space to be in. It could be also be excellent for a teenager as a play room or games room. This room also has its own WC and hand basin.

Externally, to the front is a block paved driveway providing off street parking for multiple vehicles. The south west facing rear garden is safe and secure mainly laid to lawn with high hedging to three sides providing a high level of privacy and security, perfect haven for small children and/or the family dog. To the front of the rear garden is a generous decked patio that is a perfect area to relax and enjoy alfresco dining and summer barbeques.
