Description

The property is set amongst attractive open countryside about a mile from the Hertfordshire village of Much Hadham with its excellent facilities. The area enjoys remarkably unspoilt countryside with many small villages peppered with period houses. Historically Much Hadham and the surrounding villages have been popular with commuters, as there is easy access to the M11 junctions 7 and 8 and mainline stations at Bishops Stortford and Harlow. The A10 lies about 5 miles to the west.

This attractive brick faced house dates from the mid-17th century but was extensively re-modelled in the late 19th century, when a brick façade and peg tiled roof were added. The house has been in the same family for about 50 years and has provided an excellent family home. The accommodation includes three reception rooms which lie to the front of the house, kitchen/breakfast room, utility room, a ground floor shower room and a useful cellar. On the first floor there are three bedroomss with good views, a dressing room and family bathroom. A staircase leads to two second floor rooms which would be suitable for children and have limited ceiling heights.

Outside, a short private road leads to the gravelled parking and turning area and a barn, which currently houses the oil tank and is used for log storage. Adjacent, there is a more modern building which is used as garaging and stables. The gardens around the property are well-established with many attractive trees and well-stocked shrub borders. On the north western side of the house there is a former swimming pool and a partially walled garden, beside and to the north there is a paddock divided by a small brook.

Listing
The house is Grade II Listed, considered to be of architectural and historical merit. The Listing states that the building dates from the mid-17th century perhaps with an earlier timber frame, re-modelled in the late 19th century and has had two stories and attics included. It mentions a symmetrical S front and a modern classical doorcase flanked by ground floor canted sash window bays with margin lights. On the upper floor there is a segmental headed, margin light sash windows. The house was first listed on 30 April 1985. Listed entry number 1212236.

Much Hadham is a very popular and well-known East Hertfordshire village with local store, health
centre, garage, fire station, recreation ground, public houses and primary school. The area is
convenient for the commuter, as it is situated almost equidistant between the A10 and M11. The towns of Bishop’s Stortford and Ware lie approximately 6 miles and 8 miles distant respectively, and provide a more comprehensive range of facilities, and both have mainline stations to London Liverpool Street. There are two golf courses within 2 miles of the village.
