There are 5 golf courses in the region, an equestrian center, a protected national park *La Marjal de Pego* which is located 15 km from Dénià (UNESCO gastronomic city since 2015). Denia is located in a bay at the foot of the imposing Montgó mountain range. In the very center of the bay is the port of Denia, surrounded by palm trees. Despite its importance, it has retained the atmosphere of a typical Mediterranean fishing port. From here, you can take ferries to the Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Menorca, which can be reached in around three and a half hours. Perched on a hill above the port is the impressive medieval fortress *El Castillo*, built in the 11th and 12th centuries and later enlarged. From the towers of the castle you have a wonderful view of the coast and, especially in the summer season, concerts are regularly held in the castle. On the same hill there was already an ancient Roman settlement, *Diannium*, and the remains of the fortifications and houses that were found can be seen in the archaeological museum of the castle. Other exhibits date from the ancient Iberian and Moorish period. Surrounded is *El Castillo* the old town of Denia, with narrow and picturesque streets of Moorish origin. Many beautiful buildings from the modernist era testify that Denia acquired great importance as a commercial center, especially at the end of the 19th century. Thanks also to its toy industry, Denia has achieved prosperity, especially beautiful exhibits are exhibited in the Toy Museum. Near the port is the district of *Baix la Mar* with its traditional fishermen's houses and its picturesque squares and alleys. Here you can taste the excellent seafood of Denia, well known are the *Gambas Rojas* (red prawns). Another specialty is the sweet wine *Mistela*, which is drunk as an aperitif or with dessert. Denia has 16 kilometers of fine sandy beaches which have been awarded the EU blue flag, to the north *Area de Les Marines* and to the south *Marineta Casiana*. Following the latter is a rocky area very popular with divers for the richness of its underwater world.
