Freehold
Description
Believed to have been constructed in the late 1600's, during the reign of William and Mary, this fine and substantial home has a wealth of original character and features including well-proportioned rooms with excellent ceiling heights throughout.
The historic origins of the property are evident immediately upon approaching, with the date of 1699 depicted above the pretty portico entrance with its heavy door. In recent years the property has been beautifully renovated and now offers a blend of character features such as the original panelling to one of the first floor bedrooms painted with a lovely warm white colour against the stark white of the original cornice. Many of the rooms have original cornices and covings as well as deep recessed sash windows with original concealed shutters. There are two large reception rooms to the ground floor both with open fireplaces, handsome oak flooring, and the formal drawing room with casement doors to the garden. The vaulted and modern kitchen/dining room combines a fantastic airy room with a bespoke range of units with Zimbabwean black granite work surfaces and Italian tiling. Fitted with an integrated range of Miele stainless steel cooking combi unit, oven and warming drawer, a large central island and casement doors to the south-facing garden.
A magnificent staircase leads to the first floor. There are three large bedrooms on this floor, the master with an ensuite bathroom, and a family bathroom. The second floor has two generous bedrooms set into the eaves with dormer windows and both served by a large contemporary shower room.
Gardens and Outbuildings
Stockbridge House sits behind a handsome, high flint brick wall, with an entrance leading onto a shared gravel driveway with private off street parking for a number of vehicles. The south-facing garden is surrounded by a high, flint brick wall and is very secluded and private. Recently landscaped throughout the garden provides an oasis to relax and explore with a range of shrubs and plants creating colour throughout the year.
Immediately to the rear of the property there is an expansive patio ideal for entertaining and for al fresco dining, along with a pathway to a sheltered hot tub. A further particular feature, and situated to the rear of the gardens, is a detached wooden clad outbuilding (with electric) featuring a bar/hobby room and a covered seating area, an ideal spot to finish the day.
Situation
The cathedral city of Chichester lies at the heart, both socially and culturally, of the county of West Sussex. The city lies along the south coast in one of the prime sectors of the Home Counties, within easy reach of the ever-popular coastal destinations of The Witterings, Itchenor and Bosham. The whole area is renowned as a sailors’ paradise with a myriad of sailing clubs and excellent sailing on Chichester Harbour and further afield on The Solent. Chichester is also a wonderful centre for shopping and features all of the usual high street multiples, supermarkets, and department stores as well as an extensive selection of individual boutique shops. The city is also well catered for the arts, with the Festival Theatre particularly well regarded, with its close links to the West End; hosting a number of shows, both before and after their appearance in London’s West End.
Chichester sits at the foot of the South Downs National Park, with its beautiful rolling hills providing wonderful recreational facilities, including miles of walks and rides along the famous South Downs Way. Sporting facilities in the area are excellent with, in addition to sailing off the coast, golf at West Sussex, Goodwood, horse racing at Goodwood and Fontwell, and of course with the Goodwood estate close by, the area is well served for the world-renowned motorsport events hosted by the estate, which also features an airfield.
