Leedstown is a village in Cornwall, England, situated on the B3280 road between Helston and Hayle. It lies approximately 5.5 miles northwest of Helston and 3 miles southeast of Hayle, at an elevation of 310 feet above sea level. The village is located halfway between the north and south coasts of Cornwall.
The village derives its name from the Duke of Leeds, who married into the St Aubyn family, prominent landowners in the area. Leedstown has a primary school, a pub, and a garage, serving as central amenities for its residents.
Historically, Leedstown developed during the mining boom, with several mines operating in the vicinity. Remnants of the former Crenver and Wheal Abraham mines can be seen along the road to Crenver Grove. Additionally, the former Godolphin Mine is located near Godolphin Hall, where copper was mined before the 17th century. The village is part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape, designated as a World Heritage Site in 2006.
Leedstown Community Primary School has its origins dating back to the early 19th century, with the first school funded by John St Aubyn around 1813. The current Methodist Chapel was built in 1864, featuring stained glass windows commemorating the fallen of the World Wars.
The village’s location makes it a convenient base for exploring both the north and south coasts of Cornwall. Nearby attractions include the Towans beach, recognized for its natural beauty and excellent water quality.
Leedstown offers a blend of historical significance and rural charm, making it a noteworthy spot in Cornwall’s rich tapestry of villages.
