Most people make some sort of alteration to the home they own during their residence, some successful and others less so but they all contribute to what makes it unique. Occasionally we come across somewhere that has been lucky enough to have been owned by someone with real vision and the confidence to make a genuine difference.....

Situated on Muirfield Road one of Buckley's more desirable parts, sits this spacious and versatile four, five or even six bedroom detached bungalow that deserves a closer look.

Finished off imaginatively, it produces what could be considered almost two separate dwellings thus making it the ideal home for a growing family. Very easily, you could split this accommodation into a separate annex, ideal for a teen wanting independence or at the other end, an elderly relative who needs looking after but still requires freedom.

It has also been future-proofed by having the majority of its windows renewed in recent months, which is always a comforting thought.

To the front of the home is a large parking area able to hold three vehicles, four if you are careful, which is accompanied by a section of lawn to bring some colour to the front.. .or more parking if you want to concrete over the grass.

The attractive and modern composite front door takes us into the outer lobby where there is plenty of space for the usual coat and shoe racks, along with some practical work-tops under which is a conveniently placed tumble drier....what a great use of space!

A further door leads through to the main 'L' shaped hallway with its high quality wood effect flooring and where immediately on our right, is the door into the main lounge.

This extra large room is kept bright and cheerful by the huge picture window overlooking the front of the home. In the centre of one wall is a fireplace, although now purely decorative, it once contained a gas fire. Theoretically, all the flue work is still in situ and could be easily reinstated if desired.

Alternatively, with a little extra messing about you could have the magic of the flickering light of a traditional log burner....it's all about choice and this home offers choice in spades! What really caught my eye is the media wall installed at the rear of the room, providing the perfect setting for family evenings in front of the latest Hollywood blockbuster. Now this is somewhere you can really enjoy popcorn, but without bruising your credit card...

Another door from the lounge opens into a small rear inner hallway and this is where we access the first of the bedrooms. With a little imagination (and money) you could turn this section quite easily into a separate self-contained annex. You may need planning, and we'd also suggest speaking to professional builder and the local council before considering this!

Facing front and rear respectively, there are two well-proportioned spaces currently set up as very comfortable single bedrooms but which could easily accommodate double beds, with space for accompanying furniture too.

In between the two bedrooms is the first of the home's bathrooms. With a ceramic floor and matching wall tiles, it contains a wall mounted hand basin, lavatory and a glass shower cubicle.

These bedrooms and the bathroom are separated from the main body of the home by the lounge. This suite of rooms gives a layer of flexibility that is rare and it is hard to think of a configuration of family needs that could not be met. From elderly relatives wanting privacy but the knowledge help is always at hand, to boisterous teenagers from whom Mum & Dad need some respite, it provides something for everyone. It will also save mum and dad from the costly deposit required to give your child a deposit to put down on their first home!

Re-crossing the lounge to the hall we find the third bedroom overlooking the front. Although currently being used as an ironing-come-laundry room, there is nonetheless space in here for a double bed and its accompanying furniture before we cross the hall again to find the smallest room.

Here, the home once more demonstrates the level of choice it offers you because, while it perfectly fits its present role as a dressing room/walk-in wardrobe, being so close to the principal bedroom it would make the ideal nursery. But they don't stay small forever and if you need a home office, you've got one ready-made or more obviously, it's a fifth bedroom.

This is a home for shape-shifters; seemingly able to shift its shape with you as your needs alter through time while saving you the hassle of moving. Whatever the makeup of your family, they will fit in here somehow!

Opposite here lies the principal bedroom and this offers all the space you need, aided by the large fitted wardrobe catering for all the necessary storage, that is if you don't want to use the dressing room opposite. Personally, I have never seen the point of huge bedrooms because once asleep, you don't even appreciate them...

Beside here we come to the family bathroom, and what a bathroom it is.

Linen storage is taken care of by the mirror-fronted fitted wardrobe, while the 'wood' effect flooring gives a pleasing mix of modernity and old fashioned style. Nowhere is this more evident than the bath, it's a free-standing unit of a shape seen only in old cowboy films. It receives its water via an adjacent stand pipe with an additional hand-held shower for those hard to reach places. It's all stylish, decadent and very impressive.

Still in the bathroom, let's not forget the obligatory hand basin and lavatory but you also get the best of both worlds, a shower. Obviously this is a large double-sized walk-in glass cubicle with a massive rain forest shower head and matching hand-held attachment and all lined with marble effect paneling. I'm usually quite quick in the morning, but I could spend hours in here - although you might wonder why I'm in your shower!

The remaining door off the hall takes us into the kitchen via the dining area. This is large enough to contain the sort of table necessary to seat the numbers likely to be in residence here. In addition, there are further chairs positioned against the breakfast bar to form a divider between here and the kitchen.

The kitchen contains quality fitted units that line all three available walls and provide sites for all and every piece of modern technology you could name.

The kitchen has everything you could ask for but also has something special; space. Several people could work in here contributing to the coming feast and, do so without once feeling they needed to hurt someone; something all too rare in many kitchens of this time.

A door to one side of the kitchen opens into the second lounge or as it is currently used, the bar. I'm not saying all the bar equipment is staying, but this room if you can afford to give the space up, makes a great Bar. From the proper bar in one corner and the comfortable seating, this takes entertaining friends to a whole new level. With its sliding patio doors that open onto the newly built BBQ area, it gives all year-round usability....it's a work of genius.

If you don't need a bar area, then you could also make this into bedroom six.......but I know what I'd prefer.

From the BBQ a path leads around to the kitchen door passing as it does so to a newly built seating area with a centrally positioned fire pit. This bungalow is also surrounded by other bungalows and so is not at all overlooked and makes a fabulous spot to unwind and not feel guilty about ignoring the gardening. Why, because there isn't any to do. The grass is artificial and everything else is either wood, gravel or stone, and very attractive too.

This is a place where you can sit back, open the wine, think zen thoughts and throw another sausage on the barbie, you know it makes sense. You will never have another Summer alone, this will be the place to come......so I hope you're sociable!!!

All in all this is a chance to acquire a home that is truly unique, but in a good way. The internal alterations have had a disproportionate effect on the way the home behaves. There's a possibility of a self-contained annex and on the whole, it offers a huge amount of communal space that would lend itself beautifully to family living.....And isn't that what we are looking for in a home? In the kitchen, the heart of any home, there is room to manoeuvre and with the flexibility of the adjoining lounge area (Bar), it is large enough to avoid feeling crowded and the bedrooms are adequately large to offer an alternative when a good sulk becomes imperative. The 'wood effect' floors give it a special charm and the enclosed private garden gives you the chance to dine alfresco at every opportunity. Its location is ideal for almost any requirement you can think of. And we all know what they say about location?
