Description
Description
Carron Lodge originates from the late 18th century when it was a two-storey farmhouse. Local architects James Gillespie and James Scott added a single-storey extension in Arts and Crafts style in 1901. The circular entrance porch on the east elevation and the bays and loggia on the west elevation were distinctive features. The interior had high quality timber decorative detailing in three of the main rooms.
The stable block beside the house was built in sandstone rubble with irregular windows and a hayloft. Adjoining the stables are further outbuildings with a stepped roofline. There is a single storey brick and timber shed.
High rubble walls with chamfered openings enclose the garden to the west of the house. The Kinness Burn forms the boundary to the south.
The property was subject to fire damage in 2021. GS Brown, the current owners, have obtained reports on the structure and restoration potential which are available on request. A structural engineering report has recommended under pinning.
Location
Carron Lodge is set in mature gardens and grounds just to the west of St. Andrews. The property is protected by its own woodlands with the gardens running down to the Kinness Burn which forms the southern boundary.
St Andrews is renowned worldwide as the Home of Golf. There are seven golf courses under the management of the St Andrews Links Trust. The Old Course is arguably the most famous golf course in the world and played host to the 150th Open Championship in 2022. There are many other golf courses in the area including the Duke’s Course, St Andrews Bay, Kingsbarns and Dumbarnie.
St Andrews is also well known for its university which is one of the oldest in Britain, founded in 1413. The historic town has a good range of shops, hotels, restaurants and recreational and cultural facilities which include The Byre Theatre. Beyond St Andrews is the East Neuk of Fife, with a spectacular coastline which boasts fishing villages built around picturesque harbours and sandy unspoilt beaches.
Access to St Andrews by rail, road and air is good. Leuchars railway station (8 miles) is on the main Aberdeen to London line and provides a link to Dundee and Edinburgh. Edinburgh Airport, with a wide range of domestic and international flights, is 50 miles away and Dundee Airport is 15 miles.
