Description
37 Fair Close - Originally built in 1874 to serve as a hospital for the local community, this remarkable building was decommissioned in 1924 and later transformed into three separate residences. Stepping inside, you’re welcomed by a grand entrance hall featuring an original tiled floor and an impressive staircase leading to the first floor. At the front of the home, two beautifully proportioned reception rooms boast high ceilings and retain exquisite period features. Towards the rear, a ground-floor bathroom is conveniently located off the hallway, while the spacious kitchen/dining room overlooks the rear garden. A covered garden room extends from the kitchen, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces while offering a versatile area for various uses. Ascending to the first floor, a stunning landing, enhanced by high ceilings and a central lantern roof light fills the space with natural light. Off the landing, five well-sized bedrooms provide generous accommodation, alongside a stylish family bathroom.
The History - 37 Fair Close is the central part of the building which was built in 1873/4 as a cottage hospital. This was deemed to be required by the people of Beccles following an accident on the train lines where a young man died because there was no hospital. A committee of townspeople was formed and the money was raised to go ahead. John Louth Clemence a distinguished local architect was commissioned to design the building. The first stone was laid in July 1873 with the hospital opened one year later for a 4 day exhibition before being used for its role as Beccles Hospital. In 1887 an extension for an extra ward was added to the back of the building. The building was used as a hospital until 1924 when the War Memorial Hospital took over. In 1924 the building was divided into the East and West wings and the central area became three separate houses which were sold as residential homes. They have remained as private houses ever since. The central house, No 37 has been owned by the same family since 1968. With plenty of room for a growing family, it has provided a very happy environment. Despite being in the centre of the town it is very quiet, with a large parking area and a garage at the back.
Outside - Externally, the home benefits from an expansive parking area at the front, with an additional driveway beside the neighboring residence leading to a single garage. The rear garden, unusually large for a town-center property, offers a blank canvas for those with a passion for gardening or outdoor living.
