Description
The Ragged House origins date to the mid 1800’s when Vine Hill was known as Field Lane. Built as a charitable organisation for the care of destitute children the site was visited by Charles Dickens in 1843 who was so moved by the experience that he wrote “A Christmas Carol”, he also used Field Lane, now Vine Hill as a setting for Fagin’s den in Oliver Twist.
Charles Dickens was regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era, so the building has a wonderful and very colourful history.
In 2013 the building underwent full restoration, retaining its Victorian character but now a modern and contemporary building.
Arranged over the top two floors this penthouse apartment is a wonderful home with two terraces, plenty of light and a top floor reception room with an impressive, pitched roof.
The accommodation on the second floor comprises a principal bedroom with ensuite shower room, two further double bedroom and guest bathroom. On the top floor there is a dramatic, almost double height reception room with exposed brickwork and a recessed kitchen.
Vine Hill runs parallel to Back Hill and off Clerkenwell Road, moments from Farringdon Underground (Metropolitan, Hammersmith and City, Circle and Elizabeth Lines) and Mainline Station which offer superb connections to the financial district in The City and London's West End.
Clerkenwell, described by The Times as “all that’s best about life” in the capital and named as the best place to live in London, first became a fashionable place in the 17th century as a destination where Londoners enjoyed tea gardens, theatres and spas: in fact, you can still see part of Clerks’ Well after which Clerkenwell was originally named.
The area later became famous as a centre for clock and watchmaking alongside the jewellers and goldsmiths of Hatton Garden. It remains one of the best-preserved village centres in central London – a vibrant modern community with a fascinatingly rich history.
With Exmouth Market close by offering great shopping and tremendous diversity of acclaimed restaurants and bars it remains one of London’s best kept secrets.
