Bansko, located in the southwestern corner of Bulgaria in the Pirin Mountains, has become synonymous with Bulgarian skiing. Today Bulgaria's most famous ski resort has been built over the last 20 years following the "alpine" drawing board - it has wide "highway" slopes, detachable chairlifts, smooth transitions between locations and spacious "squares" around the boarding stations of the backbone lifts.
The slopes above Bansko are spread out on the northern slopes of the two and a half thousand Todorka and its immediate surroundings in the high mountain backdrop of the Pirin Mountains. The slopes are naturally quite steep, and so are much of the runs - overall, the "left" part of the area along the Mosta, Plato and Šiligarnik lifts is more relaxed, while the middle and right around the Todorka and Banderica lifts is sportier. The most pleasant is the wide, treeless Plato plain with its blue-marked but rather brisk red runway. The upper part of the Tomba slope is again a delight with its unusual shape, resembling a giant u-ramp.
Overall, the ski area is a bit reminiscent of the Italian Bormio in its skiing character, terrain and elevation, but it is bigger. In addition, there is an unusually long exit road from the main area back to Bansko.
