This home is something very special, 'unique' really doesn't do it justice, and as such will appeal to those of you with an adventurous spirit, who crave a space that's off the beaten track and are seeking to live 'The Good Life', on ancient land with views for miles and no neighbours in sight, human ones anyway!
Peace, serenity, unspoilt views, a chance to live in a stone cottage where you can breakfast beside the stream babbling through your garden as you gaze over the valley below... You'll find all this and more at Llys Dinmael Uchaf.
Many of us secretly hanker for a home unlike any other, which explains the money spent each weekend in B&Q in a vain effort to personalise some Barrett Box or other. Well, this home has individuality built into its very essence.
Located up on a hillside, we approach along a farm track that leads us to a parking area outside the house, between two stone outbuildings*. A path leads us around the stone cottage where, arriving at the front elevation, we are treated to a jaw-dropping view across the valley. It really is a 'Wow!' moment.
This home stands in approximately a third of an acre, with the lovely big garden, which gets the sun all day long and being a particular feature. There are trees, wildflowers, flowerbeds with established bushes and plants, hundreds of snowdrops and daffodils in the spring, a fenced off area to keep chickens and ducks, including a pond and space for a small allotment, the whole thing intersected by a stream with a waterfall.
There are spaces to sit, picnic, and do yoga while enjoying the incredible unspoilt views whilst listening to the birdsong, which is a notable soundtrack to life at Llys Dinmael Uchaf. The light is spectacular and inspirational - perfect for painters, photographers and those who appreciate the glory of nature + you can run around naked and no one can see you - but please remember, sheep can be easily offended!!
It's difficult not to sound whimsical when describing this home, but it truly is a place to dream. You know they say there's a book in everyone, well it seems mine's started to leak out! Seriously though, this truly is a special place which really does need to be seen to be fully appreciated.
To the side of the main cottage is a large porch which not only provides a light and airy space to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet but also provides a useful boot room to hang coats and kick off wellies when you come in from walking in the surrounding fields because, after all, you're in the countryside now darlings!
Stepping into the cosy lounge, you're transported to the sort of oak-beamed cottage Enid Blyton would write about, where an impressively massive fireplace contains not only a traditional log burner but enough wood storage to keep you stocked up for long evenings by the fire. In keeping with the general atmosphere of the home, above the fireplace is a mantle the size of which would not look out of place as part of Nelson's flagship, giving an attractive air of permanence and solidity. The multi-fuel burner is the primary source of heat, currently, although there are radiators throughout the house, originally fed by a stove in the kitchen, which has since been removed. However, everything is in place to install a stove of your choosing, or a burner with a back boiler, should you want to re-install central heating throughout, though the current owners have never found this necessary.
Off the lounge is another room, which can be used however you see fit. Presently, it is used as the preserve for the family cats (this house is a perfect refuge for felines, being off-road and having plenty of outdoor space for exploring and tree-climbing). However, the space is completely versatile and could become an additional utility room, office, bedroom or dining room - whatever suits your personal needs. There is even the potential to site a spiral staircase into the corresponding room above to create a self-contained set of rooms, should that be of interest. I did mention there was scope to make this place your own, didn't I?
At the other end of the lounge are a series of shallow wooden steps leading up to the kitchen, which is a tribute to the highly individual tastes of the current owners and a fun canvas with which to work as you create the quirky country kitchen of your dreams.
The true impact of the stone walls and beamed ceilings really comes into play in the kitchen, which has a stylised wooden floor surrounded by fitted units providing plentiful storage. There's space for 21st century fittings should you want them, although you'll notice there's no dishwasher at present - but with a window above the sink overlooking the busy birdfeeder, washing up is certainly no chore in this house. From bluetits to woodpeckers, doves and pheasants to see, you'll happily stand for hours with your hands in the sudsy water!
The upstairs is accessed via a wooden open-tread staircase in the lounge, which emerges into the principal bedroom, and what a bedroom this is:
With traditional wooden floorboards that complement the exposed beams of the ceiling and low-level cottage windows, this is the sort of bedroom that Sleeping Beauty could happily snooze away a century or two in. The fairy tale atmosphere is maintained by another stone fireplace, this one containing a practical electric faux log burner, although the chimney breast is shared by the lounge fireplace below and installing the genuine article is a definite possibility, should that be your preference.
Through an archway at one end of the bedroom and beside the chimney stack, we pass white painted stonework that put me in mind of Santorini (and who could complain about that?) to come into the bathroom.
Running the full width of the home, this is an expansive space, its very size giving the feeling of luxury, something borne out by the fittings. A huge storage cupboard keeps all your linen tidy, while the suite comprises a hand basin with additional storage beneath, lavatory and a traditional bath with a hand-held shower that's attached to stylish mixer taps. A rather decadent feature is the way it's possible to lie in the bath up to your neck in bubbles while admiring the stunning view with no need to worry about being overlooked, as any peeping Tom would require the sort of telescope rarely seen outside of NASA...
At the opposite end of the bedroom is a door into another bedroom, currently used as a dressing room, with built in storage and a seating area. The high beamed ceiling makes it an airy and pleasant place to spend time, and, like the room directly below it, which is a mirror-image, there is scope for this space to be turned into whatever you want it to be.
As well as the main house, outside and over the stream, you'll find the large outbuilding. Actually, to call it an outbuilding is belittling it as it is so much more and has the potential to become even more still.
It has recently been re-roofed and converted into a two-storey building with electricity throughout. The ground floor is a large and beautifully equipped workshop, while the upper floor, which is accessed via an external stone staircase, is currently in use as a gym / games room. But before you start to think of the present owners as holier than thou keep-fit fanatics, one end of the room has a welcoming and comprehensively fitted out bar - my kind of people!
What is undeniable in this second stone cottage is the space on offer. There is easily enough for conversion into additional bedrooms to the main house or even a complete stand-alone dwelling, perhaps for teenagers to have the run of or even for use as a holiday let**, although you may be unwilling to share this idyll with anyone other than close friends or family - I know I would be! Equally, the space would make a perfect studio for artists, musicians or writers, where you would surely be inspired by the gorgeous views and tranquil atmosphere.
Although all this sounds as though the house is perhaps something from another time - and it is! - there is everything you need here for modern-day living, with excellent internet access via a fibre connection. There's a vibrant local community and the opportunity to engage in a range of activities within a few miles should you wish, or you can shut the door - which, honestly, really doesn't need locking round here - and pretend it's just you in the world.
You really do get the best of both worlds here. With dark skies status for exceptional star-gazing at night, spring lambs joyfully gambolling in the surrounding fields, and the sound of the stream a permanent feature of life here, Llys Dinmael Uchaf offers the perfect opportunity for you to create your dream life in the country.
* Please note, the outbuildings to the front of the cottage do not belong to this property.
