Description
Architecture and Interior
Situated in a gated courtyard, this is one of the best kept secrets in Shad Thames. Located in the new new build section, this property was created when the original warehouse was redeveloped and compliments the overall industrial aesthetic superbly. Entering on the ground floor, you enter a huge open-plan space with tall ceilings and hardwood floors throughout. The principal reception room is a capacious working space spanning nearly 1000 sq.ft, featuring an open-plan kitchen, and a separate bathroom. This is the main workspace, where the current owner operates a photography studio.
Two further reception rooms and an additional bathroom complete the property, with completely flexible living and working environments. The whole property offers a multitude of different approaches to how you can shape your life in the property, with two separate entrances on either side of the building, one of which provides on-street access.
Included in the service charges and part of the fabric of daily life, is a daytime concierge for the development. There is an allocated undercover parking space as well as a street parking permit, both outside of the central London Congestion Charging zone.
History
Colonial Wharf, now known as Butlers & Colonial Wharf was a former British Empire hub for storing goods like tea, coffee, and spices, earning the area the nickname “London’s Larder” it specialised in tea, reputedly having the largest tea warehouse in the world. It also stored grain, rubber, sugar, cloves, cinnamon and tapioca.
Situated in the heart of original Shad Thames, the immediate area is a place of rich history, including Jacob’s Island (to the right of Butler’s Wharf between Shad Thames and Mill Street). This was a Victorian slum and set the scene for Bill Sykes’ home in Charles Dickens ‘Oliver’. Jacob’s Island transformed drastically in the 20th century after being under constant bombing during the Blitz in World War Two and later in the 1970s when a period of decline in the docking industry forced the warehouses to close. Many of the existing warehouses were then converted into sympathetic loft conversions.
In The Neighbourhood
It’s a peaceful neighbourhood in Central London renowned for its warehouses, gangways, and cobbles from its industrial past and provides residents with charm, culture and convenience. Renowned destinations such as Le Pont de la Tour & Butlers Wharf Chop House are only a short walk away to the river, and some of the best pubs in Southwark are all within a 5-minute walk.
The Bankside Low line, a huge investment and refurbishment project of all the railway arches leaving London Bridge, has created a plethora of microbreweries, restaurants, coffee shops and bars, all on your doorstep.
Transport
London Bridge station is just a 12-minute walk, connecting by rail to southeast London & Kent, and linking with the Jubilee and Northern underground line. Tower Hill station is also only a 15-minute walk over the river, providing access to the Circle and District tube lines.
