About Cluttons, Islington - Sales

1 Camden Walk, London, N1 8DY

Providing expert advice on all aspects of residential sales and lettings, Cluttons' Islington office can be found in Camden Walk, just off Upper Street. The office is well placed for the other areas which we cover, including Clerkenwell, Highbury, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington.

Islington is well known for its Listed town houses, shops, pubs and railways as well as its wide variety of architectural styles ranging from modern loft apartments in period warehouse conversions to the imposing Victorian buildings in the De Beauvoir conservation area.

Many residential terraces in Islington are Grade II Listed including much of Liverpool Road, Barnsbury, Islington High Street and Upper Street. The Almeida Theatre, the original Angel public house, Islington Town Hall and several churches are also Grade II Listed structures as is the Business Design Centre, formally the Royal Agricultural Hall and the primary exhibition site for London until the 20th century.

Islington was originally given its name by the Saxons in the 11th century and became the name given to the whole Metropolitan Borough on its formation in 1899. This new borough covered Barnsbury, Highbury, Canonbury and part of Finsbury. Some housing development took place to accommodate the popularity of nearby Sadler's Wells which became a resort in the 16th century, but the 19th century saw the greatest expansion in housing.

In the early to mid 19th century, Islington became a popular place to live due to the arrival of the railway and the subsequent growth of business surrounding this. Highbury and Islington stations are located to the north, Angel to the south and King's Cross to the west, with St Pancras station, the London terminus for the international Eurostar trains, immediately adjacent.

The completion of the Victoria line and redevelopment of Angel Tube station sparked a new generation of housing development with the construction of many new blocks of small flats and the conversion of warehouses into modern apartments.

Today, the 17th century inns have been replaced with busy public houses and trendy wine bars, and Islington is now a vibrant and energetic place to live, popular with young professionals.
