Description

Harlaw House was built adjacent to the site of the Battle of Harlaw which was fought on the heath on 24 July 1411. Inscribed at its distinctive tower is: ''In memory of Provost Robert Davidson and The Burgesses of Aberdeen who fell here AD 1411.'' Built around 1840, Harlaw House was originally a Free Church manse constructed over two storeys. The four storey dressed stone tower with corbelled and crenelated parapet and angle stair turret was added in 1883 along with the corbelled angle turret added to the original house at same date. Internal features include ceiling roses, vaulted ceilings, stepped ceiling cornices, deep skirting boards, fireplaces, some studded doors and ornate architraves. Cathedral-style and bay windows provide an abundance of natural light. The generously proportioned accommodation spans two floors and a mezzanine level with additional accommodation in the tower and rooftop viewing area.

This exceptional residence has been meticulously designed to offer a wonderful blend of grandeur and comfort. Domestic tasks are catered for on the lower level where there is a large laundry room and storage space including a wine cellar. The heart of this home is undoubtedly the stunning kitchen and dining area. The kitchen boasts elegant white cabinetry, state-of-the-art appliances including a Lacanche range cooker and ample counter space. The stylish slate flooring adds character and warmth. This is the perfect space for casual gatherings and everyday living. Harlaw House has multiple hallways which ensure a smooth flow, and two staircases add to the home’s architectural interest. Versatile reception rooms offer both entertaining spaces and places for quieter moments. The current configuration is divided into four flexible reception areas: the sitting room, living room, dining room and dining kitchen, plus a home office on the ground floor. A magnificent conservatory brings the outdoors in. The mezzanine level is accessed by both the main and rear stairways and comprises a guest suite with large double bedroom and adjacent bathroom with separate shower enclosure. There is also a cloakroom with WC and wash basin. The first floor gives access to the principal bedroom and three further bedrooms which are serviced by a luxurious bathroom featuring a freestanding ornate claw foot bath. Bedroom 2 has an en suite shower room installed in the tower.

Outside: A double gated entrance leads into the driveway which runs along the side of the property leading to a parking area and garage at the end. Stone walls and beech hedging bound the property with a low level retaining stone wall along the driveway with areas of lawn and mature trees. There is also a circular area of bedding plants at the front of the property with a feature stone fountain. A gate to the side leads into a further area of lawn. The former stable block has benefited from a new roof and has auto external lighting. One of the stable feed rooms has been converted to a home gym with the other stable and feed/tack room used for storage. The block has neutral décor, carpet tiles, ceiling lights, two windows and electric heating. Double doors give access into the storage shed which has a ceiling strip light and shelving. A pretty Victorian style greenhouse is set within a raised vegetable and rose garden. The full sized tennis court has recently been resurfaced along with fencing and hedging providing an entirely enclosed and sheltered area. This completes a wonderful package of outside amenities. The entire gardens and driveway have been re-landscaped to create outdoor seating, dining and barbecue facilities. The patio is a delightful spot for alfresco relaxation. An attractive arched wooden gateway, a replica of one of the gates at Highgrove, gives access to the 1.5 acre paddock and beyond.

Garage: At the far end of the driveway is a large multi purpose building, divided into three separate units. It is currently used as a garage, workshop and golf simulator room. This building is particularly versatile and spacious for any further adaptation. The double garage is about 20’4'' x 19’7'' and has central strip lights, shelving and hooks with power distribution throughout. The middle section of the building currently houses a golf simulator and measures 19’5'' x18’6'' and is accessed from a door in the workshop. The third section is the workshop measuring 20’6'' x 19’8''. The workshop area of the garage has an upstairs shelved storage area facility. On the ground floor there are workbenches, power, light, drawer units , shelves and water tap. Attached to the side of the garage is a dog kennel with exceptionally large run.
