Description

Imposing converted former coach house and stable block.

Description

Stable Court is a fascinating property believed to date from the mid-19th century. It was built as the stables and coach house to nearby Chalmington Manor, a fine Grade II listed Victorian mansion, although Stable Court itself is not listed. The property, which has rendered elevations under a slate roof and particularly spacious accommodation of just under 8,000 sq ft, is arranged around a lovely central courtyard. Of particular note is the delightful clock tower and weather vane at the front entrance of this handsome property. A large vestibule with impressive double gates opens to reveal the front door which opens into a good size family kitchen with AGA and a large French window with sliding doors into the courtyard, flood the room with light. The accommodation circulates around this central courtyard, providing a splendid drawing room with high ceiling, impressive fireplace and casement doors to the courtyard and access to the garden, an elegant dining room with exposed stone arch, a cosy sitting room with wood burning stove, study, games room, cloakroom and utility room. From here there is access to two large store rooms and a workshop. On the first floor is a splendid landing (a reception room in itself), a superb main bedroom suite with dressing room and bathroom and there are five further bedrooms and two bathrooms. To the north of the courtyard is the studio with mezzanine floor, conservatory, shower room and wc and access to the workshop.

Outside
The property is approached from the lane via double gates, revealing a gravelled parking and turning area at the front of the house with an impressive Lime tree standing proud. To the east is the main lawn bordered by attractive hedging, mature flower beds and borders, some attractive trees and a mature Beech hedge screening the lower garden with pond, kitchen garden and fruit cage. Terrace with large dining area, access to a workshop and lovely garden views. Beyond this is a well fenced paddock which is approached via a gate on the northern boundary. Further down the lane is separate access to the field. The property extends in all to about 3.17 acres.

Location

Stable Court occupies an attractive, peaceful location in the hamlet of Chalmington within attractive grounds of over 3 acres.

Chalmington is set amongst some of Dorset’s finest countryside, justifiably designated a National Landscape, formerly known as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Close by is the larger village of Cattistock, which is much sought after both for its attractiveness and facilities which include a noted Victorian parish church, cricket ground, football field, children's playground, village hall, a shop, post office and the well regarded Fox & Hounds public house.

The larger village of Maiden Newton (about 2½ miles) has a wider range of facilities including a doctors surgery, petrol filling station and a railway station with a branch line between Weymouth and Bristol.

Other pretty villages of note locally are Cerne Abbas, Sydling St Nicholas and Evershot with the renowned Summer Lodge hotel and The Acorn Inn.

The larger towns of Bridport, Beaminster, Sherborne, Yeovil and Dorchester are all within easy driving distance and provide an excellent variety of shopping, educational, recreational and cultural facilities.

The A303 to the North of Yeovil provides a route towards the M3, London and the Home Counties and there are regular rail services to London Waterloo from Yeovil.

The area is extremely well served for both state and private schools. Maiden Newton has a primary school. Other state schools include Dorchester Middle School and The Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester. Public schools include Sherborne School, Sherborne Girls, Leweston, Bryanston, Canford, Milton Abbey and Clayesmore. Preparatory schooling at Sunninghill (Dorchester), Perrott Hill, Port Regis, Sandroyd and Sherborne Preparatory School.
