Description
Description
The first written records of Sundrum suggest that it was initially constructed in 1373 with numerous renovations and additions being included over the years. John Hamilton, a sugar merchant, purchased the estate in 1762 at the age of 23, and in the 1790s he commenced a major programme of works, extending the castle to accommodate his growing family, creating one of the most impressive properties in Ayrshire.
The East Wing forms a major part of the B Listed Sundrum Castle. Laid over four levels, the accommodation is generously proportioned and has retained an air of elegance yet provides an excellent setting for family living. The total area of private garden, magical woodland and grounds equates to approximately 2.25 acres and includes the main driveway and the gravel parking area in front of the entire castle, a further 6 acres of land is available via separate negotiation perfect for equestrian use. Within the beautiful private gardens are areas of decking offering views towards Arran, two summer houses and a 15 seater BBQ hut, there are various wood stores and timber outbuildings. A long, tree-lined avenue sweeps towards Sundrum Castle, ending in the gravel parking area leading to the entrance of The East Wing. To either side of the vestibule are a boot room and a WC. The reception hallway is as impressive as the imposing exterior and doubles up as a fine baronial dining room. The reception hall offers a spectacular view up the three levels of the building towards the roof. On the ground floor there is a bespoke fitted kitchen and a beautiful sitting room. A wide sweeping staircase ascends from the reception hallway to the upper floors. On the first floor there is a magnificent drawing room with windows on two aspects with views of the Water of Coyle. A principal bedroom with en suite bathroom is also located on this floor. The landing is spacious and currently used as a study area. The second floor offers three double bedrooms, one of which has an en suite shower room, and a family bathroom. On the third floor, the former maids accommodation has been cleverly refurbished to create a modern sitting room or a fifth bedroom, whilst the turret provides a seating area for quiet contemplation with breathtaking views over Sundrum Estate. The current owner of The East Wing owns a collection of original artefacts from Sundrum Castle, dating back to the mid-18th century, which may be available for sale under separate negotiation. In addition to its own private gardens, The East Wing has shared ownership of the estate policies, including the tennis court, and fishing rights on the Water of Coyle. The titles for the property allow for a stone built garage to serve the East Wing, one of three in the grounds.
Location
The East Wing is an elegant country home forming part of the imposing Sundrum Castle and the larger Sundrum Castle Estate. Sundrum Castle Estate extends to approximately 65 acres of rich parkland, policy woodland and meandering river walks which surround the property and offer shelter and seclusion. Each occupier of the estate owns a share of this acreage and benefits from the Estate’s delightful scenery, fishing rights and tennis court.
Sundrum Castle lies about six miles east of Ayr, Ayrshire’s foremost town, which offers a full range of shops, professional and recreation facilities. Local primary and secondary schooling is available within the town as well as private co-education at Wellington School from the ages of 3 to 18. The Ayrshire coast is famous worldwide for golf with championship courses at Royal Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry, all of which have hosted the Open Championship. There is excellent sailing on the Firth of Clyde with yachting marinas at Troon and further up the coast at Largs and Inverkip. The A77/M77 provides excellent road access to Glasgow and there is a main line railway station at Ayr.
