Description
TAVIRA
Nestled on both sides of the winding Rio Gilão, Tavira is often called “The Venice of the Algarve” – and for good reason. It’s one of the region’s most charming towns, where history and beauty go hand in hand. Stroll across the old Roman bridge, explore the ruins of a hilltop castle, or admire one of the 37 churches dotted throughout the town – some dating back to the Middle Ages. With its sunny climate, relaxed vibe, and lovely mix of cafés, restaurants, shops, and bars, Tavira is the perfect place to soak up authentic Portuguese culture or use as a base to explore the eastern Algarve. Wander the cobbled streets, discover hidden gardens, and relax in tree-lined squares. From the small fishing port to the modern market and quick ferry rides to the island beaches, Tavira is full of surprises.
BEACHES
Tavira is a fantastic spot for beach lovers. The coastline here is ideal for long walks, sunbathing, and swimming – and the sea is warmer than elsewhere in the Algarve!
Ilha de Cabanas – Just across from the fishing village of Cabanas de Tavira, this island has a narrow stretch of soft white sand that feels like a little piece of paradise. Great for a peaceful beach walk.
Ilha de Tavira – Probably the most famous beach near Tavira. With around 11km of golden sand and a Blue Flag to show off its clean water and facilities, this island is only 3km south of town and is a favourite for a full day of sun, sea, and food – thanks to a handful of local restaurants.
Praia do Barril – Known for its unique “anchor cemetery,” where over 100 rusted anchors sit as a tribute to Tavira’s tuna fishing past. You can reach this beach by foot or by a fun mini train. It’s wide, clean, and simply stunning.
RESTAURANTS
Tavira is a treat for foodies! Whether you're after traditional Portuguese dishes or something a bit more refined, you’ll find plenty of top-rated restaurants here – from cosy tascas to elegant dining spots.
