Ponte de Lima is a Portuguese town located in the Alto Minho sub-region, belonging to the Norte region and the District of Viana do Castelo. Situated on the banks of the Lima River, it is often referred to as the oldest town in Portugal, having received its charter in 1125. Its name derives from the bridge that crosses the Lima River, built by the Romans and later expanded in the Middle Ages. Administratively, it is the seat of the municipality of Ponte de Lima, an urban area of 2.72 km2,[4] in a total of 320 km², subdivided into 39 parishes, and 41,169 inhabitants in 2021,[5] with a population density of 128 inhabitants per km2.[6]
