Description

Built in 1961 by renowned developer Wates, this three-bedroom, end-of-terrace house has been the subject of an insightful contemporary renovation by its current owners. It has a private south-facing garden, along with a garage. Sited on the Elms estate, the house is an eight-minute walk from Chislehurst station in Bromley, where direct, high-speed routes arrive in Charing Cross and Canon Street in 30 and 35 minutes respectively.

The Tour

Entry is to a hallway, which opens out into an impressive, open-plan living area, extended by the previous owners and demarcated by a central column. Engineered oak flooring runs the expanse of the house, which has a neutral, curated palette of high-quality materials throughout.

An Astep Model 2065 pendant light, designed by Gino Sarfatti in 1950, emits a warm glow above the dining 'zone', while the sitting area is bathed in light from glazed doors to the garden. Structured plywood shelving lines one wall in a staggered formation that mirrors the kitchen; a slatted-timer base below has been thoughtfully fitted to conceal radiators and cables.

A new oak-veneered plywood kitchen has been installed in a wraparound formation, with a sleek white granite worktop that reflects the light and continues down to the floor on one side. Open, structural plywood shelving is fitted above, framing views towards the garden at the rear. Further wall-mounted shelving has reeded-glass sliding doors – a nod to the building’s mid-century heritage. Integrated ovens are stacked alongside a dishwasher and fridge-freezer. There is also a neat WC, tucked away off the hallway alongside a large cloakroom cupboard.

Sanded and re-stained, the house's original open-tread staircase ascends to the first-floor bedrooms. All three have built-in storage and contemporary details such as Buster & Punch chrome door furniture.

The white-tiled shared bathroom can also be found here, tucked behind a neat pocket door and finished with Gerberit and RAK sanitaryware. A hand-blown Artemide Dioscuri globe light, designed in 1999 by Michele De Lucchi, adorns the wall.

Outside Space

A south-facing garden can be accessed via the living area. There’s a terraced area paved for outdoor dining, with slightly raised and planted beds and a lawn beyond. Japanese acers, fatsia japonica and a large photinia 'Red Robin' tree work alongside mature thuja conifer trees, a vast sequoia redwood, and a windmill palm to provide shelter. Courtesy of the house's end-of-terrace position, the garden also has direct side access from the street.

The house has its own garage en bloc, as well as a storage shed to the front.

The subject of a recent renovation, a remarkable steel and aluminium sculptural estate map at the Elms' entrance was made to a design by the celebrated 20th-century graphic designer FHK Henrion.

The Area

Wellsmoor Gardens is situated on a peaceful cul-de-sac on the Elms estate. The house lies next to the Jubilee Country Park and the National Trust’s Petts Wood and Hawkwood, which provides plenty of rambling walking routes. Chislehurst Golf Course is a 15-minute walk away, and only slightly further afield is Sunridge Park, home to a historic 18-hole course and driving range.

Chislehurst's high street is within walking distance and has plenty of boutique shops and restaurants, including The Giggling Squid and Ole Kyiv. The Cockpit and Tigers Head pubs are also nearby.

Bromley High School and Coopers School are both nearby offering secondary education alongside St Nicholas Primary, which is a four-minute drive from the house.

Chislehurst station is an eight-minute walk away and offers regular services into London Bridge (17 minutes) and Cannon Street (30 minutes) directly. In the other direction 15 minutes on foot is Bickley station, which runs direct services London Victoria (31 minutes) and Thameslink services to the City (39 minutes).
