Description

A Grade II listed character cottage in the heart of Oaksey village, with attractive gardens to the front and rear and a variety of original features.

Description

A quintessential Cotswolds cottage, Latchets is set at the heart of Oaksey within easy reach of the village school and pub. The cottage is Grade II-listed with origins going as far back as the 15th century, with later alterations. It is believed to be the oldest dwelling in the village. Character features abound, including an imposing inglenook fireplace with wood-burning stove, wood floors, exposed timber beams and lovely stone mullioned windows. Within the kitchen there is a half stable door opening onto the delightful gardens, completing the idyllic scene. The house is decorated in an elegant, country style befitting the age and setting.

The ground floor is open plan and comprises a combined kitchen, living and dining room with windows on both sides and a separate utility room/cloakroom. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms with built-in storage and a bathroom, with the landing large enough to support a home office space.

Outside
The Latchets is situated within mature landscaped gardens, enclosed by traditional drystone walls. It is set back from the road and feels tucked away, with the front of the house having a pretty gravelled area surrounded by mature borders. Most of the outside space is found to the rear, where there is a large Yorkstone terrace accessed from the kitchen. Steps lead up to a lawned area enclosed by a variety of mature trees including apple, cherry and gid, and there is an impressive wisteria climbing the rear elevations of the house. From the gardens there are views over the neighbouring church and looks onto the surrounding countryside towards Flisteridge Wood. The garden also includes a stone-built outhouse.

Location

Oaksey is a small village on the Wiltshire/Gloucestershire border on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Village amenities include a primary school, pub, village shop and a church, with a golf club on the eastern outskirts of the village. The neighbouring village of Crudwell has further amenities and an award-winning pub, The Potting Shed, and boutique hotel, The Rectory. The larger centres of Tetbury (7.6 miles), Malmesbury (7.4 miles) and Cirencester (8.4 miles) have more extensive amenities including superstore shopping.

Communications are excellent with the property being within daily travelling distance of Swindon, Chippenham, Bath, Bristol, Gloucester and Cheltenham. There is a fast and regular train service to London Paddington from Kemble (66 mins) which is about three miles away. There are many highly regarded local primary and secondary schools locally as well as a wide choice of well-known private schools within easy reach including Beaudesert, the Cheltenham colleges, Prior Park, Westonbirt, Rendcomb and Hatherop Castle.
