Description
The retail units form part of Spinning Jennies, a contemporary mixed-use redevelopment of the former Beales department store, located on Finkle Street which forms part of Kendal's main and pedestrianised retailing centre, connecting with Stricklandgate/Highgate to the north and Stramongate, Branthwaite Brow and Market Place to the south. Finkle Street has a range of shops, banks and cafes including Jules B, White Stuff, Nationwide, Yorkshire Building Society, Nevisport as well as a vibrant mix of local retailers, cafes and restaurants.
Kendal town centre is set to benefit significantly from a major £13.7 million Levelling Up Funding investment, spearheaded by a partnership between Kendal College and Westmorland & Furness Council. Kendal College has expanded into the upper floor of the previously underutilised Westmorland Shopping Centre, establishing its third campus location in the heart of Kendal. The initial phase has already brought around 80 staff and 200 students into the town centre daily, positively impacting local retail and hospitality businesses, as the college intentionally does not offer catering to encourage local spending.
The next phase of the of the college campus development will see a £2.5 million investment, which will increase student numbers to over 500. Other areas of funding include the Market Hall (£4.5 million) to create a state-of-the-art facility, Market Place (£4.5 million), and improvements to Kent Street adjacent to Spinning Jennies and The Riverside (£3 million). These investments will enhance Kendal's retail core, support local businesses, and strengthen the overall economic vibrancy of the town.
37 & 39 Finkle Street are situated between Yorkshire Building Society and the Spinning Jennies Farm Shop & Retail Outlet, opposite New Shambles.
SPINNING JENNIES DEVELOPMENT
Formerly the Beales Department Store, which closed its doors in 2020, the Spinning Jennies scheme has been rolled out in phases which will involve the full redevelopment of Kendal's largest retail space to provide a variety of uses. Spinning Jennies have committed to revitalise a prime retailing area in Kendal and has transformed the ground floor into smaller trading spaces which are operated by local businesses, selling local quality products.
The development as a whole includes an urban market-style food hall with high quality independent producers, a champagne bar and tearoom, a boutique shopping floor with dedicated retail space for independent shops, creative businesses and innovative venue to work in, as well as residential and holiday accommodation.
The refurbishment of 37 and 39 Finkle Street formed part of Phase I of the development and the units have been completely renovated and modernised and are ready for immediate occupation.
The self-contained retail units with shop frontages and access from Finkle Street, providing excellent profile within one of the main shopping stretches of Kendal town centre. A floorplan is attached showing the open plan trading space, each unit has plaster painted walls and ceilings, LED downlighting, infrared heating, kitchenette and WC.
