History
Ardmore Church, Sneem, Co Kerry
On April 30th 1868, the then commissioners of education gave aid to build Glenlough School on the then landlord Francis C. Bland Estate. The first teacher at the school was David Fitzgerald and was paid £38 yearly and his assistant Anne Bennett was paid £36 yearly. One of its famous teachers was P.W Palmer who started in 1924, chairman Kerry Irish National Teachers organisation, member of Kerry Co Council and in 1948 a fine Gael T.D. It is recorded on 30th June 1932 it had 86 pupils, two separate classrooms and a separate playground. It was not until 1920 when it was finally amalgamated. The bishops were against this as they said it would be detrimental to the feelings, and modesty of young girls. It closed 1st July 1967and it had 31 pupils who moved to the school in Sneem village. Then it was converted into a church, it was one church you dare not be late for mass as your only option to enter was mid-way, where everyone would notice. Sadly, the church closed in 2010, its new owner got planning permission to convert it to its third reincarnation, to this beautiful 3 bed house.
