Description

A Grade II* Listed Building of Significant Historical Interest. A stunningly beautiful church briming with ornate artistic detail. A property marvel.

St. Peter’s Church, located in The Grove on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, is a former Church of England ecclesiastical building of notable historical and architectural significance.

Designed by Major-General Sir Edmund Du Cane, the church was constructed between 1870 and 1872 at a cost of £8,000, utilising convict labour from the adjacent HM Prison Portland. It is believed to be the only church in the country built solely by convict labour. Consecrated in August 1872, it served both the residents of The Grove and the military garrison stationed at Verne Citadel. Many of those individuals are commemorated within the church.

The building holds Grade II* listed status, with additional Grade II listings for its gate piers and boundary walls to the north and west. The property is also included in Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.

Constructed from Portland stone with slate roofing, St. Peter’s was built in the Romanesque style, featuring ornate architectural details and retaining many original features. It is set within walled grounds adorned with mature trees. The stained-glass windows, dating from the 20th century, include a replacement installed during World War II, dedicated to the memory of Bandmaster J. Tyson and the men of the Dorset Regiment who were killed in action.

Notably, the church contains a mosaic surrounding the porch and chancel, created by female convicts—including the infamous Constance Kent, who was serving a life sentence at HM Prison Parkhurst.

During its active use, the church played a significant role in both community and military life, reflecting its architectural and historical importance.

Due to some disrepair, the property will require restoration work, particularly to parts of the roof. Any repairs must, of course, comply with the building’s listed status.

The church sits on approximately c0.6 acres, offering a gross internal area of about 362 sqm (3,900 sqft). This presents a unique opportunity to acquire a building of historic significance, suitable for various uses—such as a community hub or other adaptive projects. With the necessary planning consents, it has potential for a wide variety of uses.
