Situation
Chorad is located within the charming hamlet of Kilchattan Bay which lies on the island's southern end, along the coast road at the foot of a steep hill called the Suidhe Chattan (Chattan’s seat) which shields the village from the prevailing westerly wind. A sandy bay known locally as the Wee Bay can be accessed directly from the property. Rothesay has thriving shopping, leisure and educational facilities including a larger sized Co-op. Caledonian MacBrayne operates a frequent ferry service to Wemyss Bay, which has direct rail links to Glasgow. A second ferry service runs between Rhubodach on the north of Bute to Colintraive giving access to Argyll and the West Highlands. There is a regular bus service (approximately every hour) to Rothesay and the wider Island. The two nearest airports are Glasgow and Prestwick, which are approximately 35 and 50 minutes’ drive respectively from Wemyss Bay.
Leisure
There are 3 golf courses on Bute, Kingarth – a quirky 9-hole links course (5 minutes’ drive from Chorad), Rothesay, a Ben Sayers designed 18-hole course and Port Bannatyne 18 holes, all with outstanding views. Bute is an area of significant natural beauty and mild climate, with many opportunities for coastal and hill walking and mountain biking. Fresh water and sea fishing are available, and there are shooting and stalking opportunities. The island has its own grass airstrip for light aircraft.
Sailing
The area is renowned for its sailing on the Kyles of Bute, which is a National Scenic Area. Tighnabruaich and Colintraive to the north, and the Crinan Canal and Tarbert to the West, are centres of lively sailing activity throughout the season. There are marinas, chandlery services and sheltered moorings in Rothesay and Port Bannatyne.
Travel Directions
From Glasgow, travel west on the M8 to Greenock, and then continue on the A78 to Wemyss Bay. Take the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to Rothesay (35 minutes). On leaving the ferry at Rothesay, turn left onto the A844, bear left at the roundabout onto East Princes Street and continue on the A844 for some 7.4 miles until the road meets the Kingarth Hotel & Smiddy bar, turn left at the hotel and proceed along the B road for approximately 0.5 mile before turning left onto a gravel track road, proceed along the gravel track road in front of a row of properties to fins Chorad."
