Description

A dynamic pitched roof creates unexpected volumes in this spacious one-bedroom apartment on Helix Road, a residential street close to the open green spaces of Brockwell Park and its popular lido. Inside, an open-plan living space is bright and cleverly divided in a way that preserves its cohesive, flexible feel.

The Tour

This apartment lies on the top floor of a red-brick and stucco-dressed house on peaceful Helix Road. A communal front door provides access to a shared hallway and stairs, which ascend to this apartment’s first-floor entrance.

Entry is to a skylight-lit hallway with a pocket door to the open living space. An angular roofline made up of a series of beam-lined pitches creates an immediate sense of spaciousness. Painted School House White by Farrow and Ball, the light-coloured walls and ceiling amplify the brightness that enters from the front and back.

Next to the pocket door is a kitchen with charcoal-grey units in an L-shape, a solid oak countertop and concealed appliances. An exposed steel beam, painted cream, runs along one side and provides display space for favourite objects.

Engineered wood floors spread out underfoot, continuing up a short flight of stairs to the sitting space. It has plenty of room for distinct dining and seating areas, and is framed by skylights and a wall of exposed brick.

At the other end of the entrance hallway is a serene bedroom with bespoke storage concealed amid a wall of butt-and-bead panelling. Soft carpet spreads out underfoot, and a two-over-two sash window invites in a soft brightness. There is also a handy utility cupboard with built in shelving, as well as more bespoke storage cabinetry in the hallway.

Next door is the bathroom, a crisp space with more butt-and-bead panelling (here painted a light blue) as well as a generous walk-in rain shower. There is also underfloor heating here.

The Area

Helix Road lies a short walk from Brockwell Park, one of London's finest green spaces. It has a popular lido, a Grade II-listed art deco pavilion, a café, tennis courts and a walled garden. Each summer, it is host to the Lambeth Country Show, as well as an array of music festivals. Several popular restaurants are nearby, including Naughty Piglets and Llewelyn's in Herne Hill.

Brixton is to the north of the apartment; popular destinations here include Brixton Village, Market Row and Acre Lane. The Ritzy Cinema, Electric Brixton and Brixton O2 Academy are much-loved institutions. Another local favourite is The Department Store, a grand renovated 1876 Bon Marche building that now houses collaborative workspaces, a Pure Vinyl record shop, a community post office and Canova Hall restaurant and bar.

Tulse Hill is also nearby; we've written about our recommendations in the area in greater depth. Dulwich Village is also within walking distance via Brockwell Park and is home to the wonderful Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Brixton station (Victoria line) is a 20-minute walk, 12-minute bus, or six-minute cycle from the apartment, while Tulse Hill station is a 25-minute walk, 11-minute cycle, or 12-minute bus and runs services to London Bridge in under 20 minutes.

About The Modern House, London

St Alphege Hall Kings Bench Street London SE1 0QX
Industry affiliations:

The Modern House is an estate agency that helps people live in more thoughtful and beautiful ways. We have been successfully selling Britain's finest modern architecture since 2005, representing design-led homes throughout the UK from our offices in central London.

The Modern House meets the growing demand for exceptional living spaces of all kinds, including flats, lofts, conversions, architects' own homes, new builds and period houses. Our name is inspired by FRS Yorke's celebrated book 'The Modern House' (1934), which introduced modernist architecture to a British audience.

We are excited by homes that pay attention to the timeless principles of modernism: space, light, materials, nature and decoration. Combined, we believe design can be a powerful force for good.
