Abbots’s Rest has been recently and thoughtfully reconfigured with gracious rooms with high ceilings and a feeling of history, spaciousness and opulence. There is now a central hallway, leading to a magnificent yet comfortable family kitchen with the important central fireplace with hearth, mantle and historic tiling. This room also benefits from designated seating and dining areas.  The family kitchen is enhanced by quality painted hardwood fronted kitchen units, sitting under quartz worktops, with the cooking appliances and dishwasher, being by Miele, with the remainder of the built in fitments being Bosch. Beyond the central island unit, there is also the surprise of a compact utility, behind a sliding pocket door, with Belfast sink, quartz work surface, and inset washer dryer, together with WC.  Adjacent to the family kitchen, there is bedroom two which is currently arranged as a study, with built in feature bookcase wall and provision of wall mounted TV, but is also designed to accommodate a double bed.  Beyond this room to the central corridor, there is a fully tiled shower room with W.C.  The corridor continues, to the master bedroom with ensuite, and the showstopping main living room, with paneled walls, and the important focal listed fireplace.  The accommodation has been redesigned with considerable thought, with useful storage areas throughout the accommodation, often overlooked within apartments.   This is an important and luxurious living space, which was never intended to be sold, but offers a rare opportunity for gracious edge of town living.

The History

Built by Richard Prynce between 1578 and 1582, Whitehall mansion was situated on land confiscated from Shrewsbury Abbey during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and quite possibly constructed using building materials taken from the demolished elements of Shrewsbury Abbey. The Mansion is one of the most important Listed residential landmark buildings within the county town of Shrewsbury and designated Grade II*. Whitehall Mansion is described by British Heritage, as 'A fine and significant example of a late sixteenth century house'.

The Project

The main stone building was converted into 8 apartments in approximately 2005. Apartment 4 occupies the majority of the elevated ground floor. This large, important and gracious apartment was purchased by the current owners in 2022, as a full refurbishment project and with the guidance of Local Architects in collaboration with the local conservation department, has been extensively and lovingly restored and refurbished. The apartment was never intended to be resold and despite being furnished has never been occupied since works were completed and is now being offered for sale.

The property has been refurbished throughout using the finest of materials with cut oak floors throughout (only interrupted with sold marble), finest porcelain wall tiles, with additions and alterations seamlessly blending with original features to include the two important and historical listed statement fireplaces to the main living room and also the generous family kitchen. Location

Originally the immediate setting of Whitehall Mansion was dominated by the adjacent 1960s office building to the rear, but has recently been enhanced by the Whitehall Gardens housing scheme, by respected regional developers Shropshire Homes, which is now well advanced. With the benefit of two secure parking spaces, the apartment offers one of the most important and luxurious apartments in the county yet within walking distance of historic Shrewsbury town centre but also benefitting from good local facilities. The Guardian named Shrewsbury one of its 'Happiest Places to Live in 2025' and the top town in the Midlands. The popularity of the town grows year on year.
