Situation
The Old Post Office is located in a situation of great natural scenic beauty at the northeastern midpoint of the Island of Jura at the small and pretty hamlet of Lagg, the house enjoys an elevated setting with views extending out across the sheltered little sandy anchorage at Lagg and out across the Sound of Jura towards the mainland. On the northern side of Lagg there is a smaller more private beach good for swimming and crab fishing. Today rural tranquillity combines wilderness with agriculture, deer graze with cattle and sheep, kites fly high and seals and otters are not far away.

The main village on Jura is Craighouse a ribbon settlement on the island of Jura, it is typically west highland in style and is very picturesque. Craighouse, is about 8.5 miles to the south of Lagg and is home to an active community and a range of amenities including a well provisioned community village shop, restaurant, café, village hall, welcoming hotel, a good medical service with two resident GP’s, and a world famous whisky distillery. The village also boasts a rum distillery, photography gallery and studio as well as a craft and gift shop. Petrol and diesel pumps and an EV charging station are also present.

Craighouse has both pre-primary and primary schooling, secondary education is at Islay secondary school in Bowmore.

The island hosts events such as the Jura Music festival, Jura Whisky Festival (part of the Islay Festival of Music and Malt,) Regatta and Fell Race which brings an excellent and vibrant atmosphere to the Island. Further up to the end of The Long Road there is a gin distillery at The Stables/Ardlussa and further north is Barnhill where George Orwell lived and wrote 1984.

On Jura there is a regular transport by coach between Feolin and Inverlussa mornings and afternoons all days except Sundays.

Jura can be accessed from the Isle of Islay by car, using the reliable roll-on roll-off ferry from Port Askaig to Feolin. During the summer months day drips to Jura from the mainland are a possibility using the Jura passenger only ferry service between Tayvallich and Craighouse. There is also the seaplane which offers convenient links off the island, with further air connections via nearby Islay Airport.

Historical Note
Lagg was once the main crossing point to the mainland and the pier and slip was built 1814 by Thomas Telford in order to facilitate transport of people, goods and not least cattle coming from Colonsay, Islay and Jura. The cattle droving activity influenced the development of the village. The old Post Office being built in the mid 1700’ became the post office in 1860 when the post was transported by pony and trap to Feolin and back.

Islay
The nearby Isle of Islay is a combination of dramatic sea cliffs, mountain moorland, and sweeping sandy bays bordered by sea water and the machair which is the low lying and highly fertile area of grassy ground between the beach and the peat bogs further inland. The machair is a haven for wildlife in particular in the spring and autumn when migrating birds settle to rest before continuing their travel to Northern Eurpoe or Southern Africa. There are several conservation areas with emphasis on bird watching. The famous archaeological site of Finlaggan tells the story of the Lords of the Isles 1500 years ago.

Islay is world famous for its nine working distilleries and the now well-established Islay Festival of music and malt occurs at the end of May each year and draws people from all over the world.

The centrally located Bowmore hosts several shops for groceries, a butcher, a shop for households and garden utensils, a bank, many cafes, restaurants and pubs. There is also an indoor swimming pool.

The Islay airport is 34 miles distant from The Old Post Office and offers regular flights to and from Glasgow. Car rental is available.

As with most parts of Scotland one is never too far from a golf course and at nearby Islay, the internationally famous Machrie Golf Links designed by Willie Campbell.

Productive sea fishing from shore and boat is available locally and there are trout and salmon opportunities by permit in surrounding rivers and hill lochs. Managed game shooting and stalking are also available on the island.

The countryside is some of the most scenically attractive on the west coast of Scotland, it is a delight to walk, cycle, wild swim or simply just to enjoy the peace, tranquillity and flora and fauna of the island. Wildlife abounds, the distinctive wild goats of the island with their light coats and dramatic horns inhabit the island and foreshore, there are frequent sightings of dolphins, seals, otters, seabirds and numerous large raptors.
