Description

St Catherine Court has an imposing position on Catherine Street. A Greek Doric portico suggests that something important lies behind the blue doors of the former Badcox Chapel. As you enter, the space opens up into a sun-drenched communal courtyard. Potted plants and stainless-steel planters are arranged to create a leafy spot to enjoy throughout the warmer months.

The main building entrance is off to the right. As you enter, you are immediately reminded of the origins of this building: the scale of the communal hallways stretches to full height, and two ornate Art Nouveau stained-glass windows make a fascinating feature.

The flat is located up three flights of stairs. On entering the flat, there is a handy hallway that leads to the three rooms, Forbo Marmoleum flooring has been fitted throughout and as each room is painted Farrow and Ball 'School House White', sunlight bounces around the rooms effortlessly. The double-height ceiling accommodates the oversized sash window, which offers unique views towards Catherine Hill and the rooftops below. A bank of stainless-steel kitchen units contrasts perfectly with the period setting. Topped with a solid wooden worktop, the kitchen includes an integrated electric oven, hob, and ceramic sink and SMEG washer/dryer, and a freestanding fridge to the side.

The bathroom has been renovated by the current owners and now includes a Burlington stand alone shower, pedestal sink and art-deco fixtures and fittings create an elevated space. Vintage crittal window fitted internally artfully allows natural light into the otherwise darker room. The final room makes the most of the heigh ceiling. A freestanding Victorian roll top bath takes centre stage, while a set of wooden stairs leads up to the mezzanine level, it is fitted with neutral coloured 100% wool carpet and space for a king-sized bed.

Currently set up as a successful Airbnb but would also make a wonderful pied-à-terre or first-time buy.

The original chapel was built by the Baptists of Badcox in 1711, later demolished and rebuilt in 1841 to accommodate the growing congregation and additional schoolrooms. Closed in 1962, it was sold to Frome Council to serve as the County Library, later becoming a furniture showroom before being converted into flats in the 1980s.
